almost anything is possible if your pockets are deep enough . your idea , practical ? no . benifit ? none . cost ? more than car . just take a look under your car and see . other than looking "COOL" why ? good luck .

Re: body panel exhaust

A few guys have run the exhaust to exit below the gfx just before the rear wheel.

Personally, I like the dual tips out back.

Re: body panel exhaust

look under the car. there is no way to install exhaust like that on this car without cutting up everything, Aside from there not being anyplace to put a muffler before that point.

The rear control arms mounting points to the body are right there, they are hard points of the car, parts of the "frame" and there is no way to get a pipe there.

only way to do something like that would be in the rear, behind the tires, out the quarter panel, but you would probably loose the spare tire in the process.

its just not practical on this car.

Re: body panel exhaust

I don't have a spare tire and I'm not putting a muffler on the car I'm running two pipes straight down from headers and gonna run them out before the rear tires under the body

Re: body panel exhaust

I've seen then run out just under, but never through. You'd pretty much hafta go up through the floor to go out the side. Then build a new floor section over the pipe inside.

But I have seen these, including one with a muffler, for those who want a muffler & even mine has a bullet muffler just before the pipe goes up & over the axle so there are different ways to have a muffler before a side exit exhaust on a 3rd gen.

The side exit is not too bad, but through the body is a bad idea. I have seen some trucks like that and lever liked it one bit. I mean why cut holes in a vehicle?

Here's a pic of an IROC I saw at Carlisle back in 2007. He modified the ground effects a bit, and ran the exhaust through it:

Re: body panel exhaust

With the under body and fact the car sits low, the only way to run it on anything used on the street is going to require cutting and fabrication. I've seen it done before - if done right it is a quirky & interesting detail, if not, it becomes a nightmare.

I see more drag cars run them out the front of the GFX and front fenders rather than than the rear. Its just not practical.

Two examples:

73 Firebird:

He pretty much backhalved the rear of his car to get room for it:

"Free tubing" is like saying you got a free rod bearing to fix your knocking sbc. It's a drop in the bucket compared to what it takes.

I strongly suggest you run mufflers. The no mufflers on a stock engine thing sounds awful and really perpetuates the stereotypes of inconsiderate, trashy thirdgen owners regardless of how wonderful of a person you may be. The 73 above is very loud and he went through the trouble of using THREE mufflers to keep it quiet.

It isn't cool when the entire town is annoyed at how loud your car is. The cops start giving you and everyone else tickets because "kids today" dont have any sense of restraint when it comes to loud noise. It will eventually lead to laws being passed to prevent us from being able to modify our exhausts at all. The best sounding cars have mufflers. Period.

Here's another, but this one is barely quiet enough to be race track legal, much less street legal, but he built the car to be a track car, not a grocery getter:

Just so you can read through how other people in the world think about straight pipes, and remember the smaller displacement engines dont make nearly as much volume, so just a cat can make up for a lack of muffler. We cant get away with that in our cars:

http://mustangboards.com/v6-tech-for...ght-pipes.html

http://www.srt8oc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25784

Literally EVERYONE hates straight pipes, and they hate them way more than the above car guys do. And real car guys still hate straight pipes.

Re: body panel exhaust

Muffler will be determined by how much room you have. Personally I think Flowmasters and Aerochambers and magnaflows are all idea mufflers. But you need room to do that, which means mounting it in the back of the car. Running the stock location...

Not true. I have a Magnaflow bullet style muffler under the back seat area with plenty of ground clearance that never bottoms out even over speed bumps & it could be moved forward enough to turn for a side exit.

And I am sure that there are plenty of other makes of mufflers that could be mounted the same way.

I wasnt referring to bullet style mufflers. I like full-size mufflers, but yeah if you run bullet style mufflers you should be okay, although they do still take away from ground clearance.

I was referring more to a muffler like this:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-11229/

I ran spiralflow bullets for a while and I hated how those took away from my ground clearance too.

Re: body panel exhaust

I have been wanting to do a side exit exacts like that for awhile. I WILL do it eventually but it's a long way off. There will be a lot of fabrication involved. You would have to section and raise the floor for the exhaust, somehow relocate the LCA mount or have the exhaust swept back at a very extreme angle in order to clear the rear subframe area. If you want it on both sides then you would have to get around the torque arm. Most of the cars that I've seen do this will have the exhaust routed up into the cabin then over the driveshaft like the previously pictured 2nd gen.

Re: body panel exhaust

Most of the cars/trucks that you see do this are able to get away with it easier because their side skirts hang fairly low to begin with. Ours don't, in fact the floorboards are closer to the ground than our side skirts/GFX are.

2 of these mufflers:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-17676/

mounted under the rear seats, with a turnout in front of each wheel would be pretty badass. with long tube headers and an X pipe i bet it would sound pretty good and move enough air to support something like 500hp.. the only problem then becomes ground clearance where the pipe turns out under the rocker panel, but that could be overcome with some NASCAR "boom tube" style exhaust tips that are only a couple of inches tall and 10" wide..
