Re: SLP Shorty Headers

Dyno Don is selling me one of his Y-Pipes with instructions on how to mate it to the SLPs.

How can yall tell they are stainless by pictures? Just curious.

And yea I know 409 has more iron in it than say 304.

Stainless is just mild steel mixed with 10% cromium.

How can you tell? I dunno. everything I've owned that was stainless ended up being a dull blackish like your pix. Everything I owned that was just cold rolled mild steel turned orangy and flaked.

Guess it's faith. The first 5 things I owned that I was told was stainless rusted a certain way.

Yeah, SLPs have just enuff carbon in them to discolor to black but they shouldn't rot in our lifetime.

Re: SLP Shorty Headers

So I am good to use steel headed brush drill bit to clean them up? It's going to obviously take off any of the coating left, but it looks like crap anyway.

After I get the entire headers to look like that little spot I did, what will they do? I'm going to have the headers in storage for probably a month before I use them, so should I do that or just leave them like they are for now? Basically would you clean them up if you had the free time or leave them like they are? If it has any negative effect I obviously don't want to do it.

Thanks for the info guys, makes me feel better about the purchase. Also is there not a single marking on the headers indicating what model they are?

Re: SLP Shorty Headers

Use a stainless steel wire brush to clean stainless headers or your just going to spread more carbon on them.
you can clean em up but they will turn back that way over time.

Nope i dont think they marked them like hooker/edelbrock and others did. SLP had only three headers for our cars that im aware of

-tri-Y's
-shorties in 1 5/8"
-shorties in 1 3/4" which is what you have apparently. All SLP headers were stainless along with their y pipes to my knowledge.

No part numbers on headers at all.
As I finally just found out there are 2 typs of 1 5/8s headers.
The Tri-Y and the type that look like the 1 3/4 headers..

Re: SLP Shorty Headers

What if I use an abrasive head like this:

I'm not sure what they are made out of, but I do know they will take metal off easily if you aren't careful.

Anyone know if I can use this without spreading more carbon on the headers?

Did this Friday night, easily gained at least 1/4" of clearance by shifting column away from engine more. Super easy mod to do providing instant clearance!

Old thread, I know. Can anyone provide a link to Eastwoods titanium ceramic coating? I searched Eastwood's site. Is it a spray paint, or powder coat?
