Pics wanted of 40 series flowmasters

Hey looking at changing out my 80 series flowmaster with a 40 series. Just wondering from people that have them or had them if they have any pics so i can see what kind of setups are out there. Thanks!

I assure you it's a 40 series as evident by the deep and extremely loud muscle car sound even when it's just idling.

I wouldn't recommend a 40 series if you are putting it on a daily driver as it will drive you nuts. It has a very deep drone all the time. Since my 82 is a 3-speed, it's even worse at 55 mph.

Re: Pics wanted of 40 series flowmasters

Isn't there a passenger side tail pipe in the pic, suggesting it's a dual outlet muffler? 40 series is only single in single out.

This is true, the 40 series is not a crossflow muffler.

That may be, but mine is single 3" in dual out. Google it, you'll find 40 series, single in dual out, dual in dual out all day. When I get back home, I'll drag out the paper work to get the model number for those intersted. Yes, Flowmaster makes a single in dual out 40 series. They are not limited to single in single out.

I did some googling and checked flowmaster's site and you are right, there are multiple configurations for the 40 series. Sorry for the misinformation.

However, the 40s all seem to have the inlet(s) on one side of the muffler and outlet(s) on the other unlike the 80 series which is set up like our stock mufflers. If this is the case your muffler may be installed incorrectly.

The 40 only comes with dual outlets that are on the same side as mentioned above.. Hence why the 80 series is so popular.

Hmm, that's what I'm finding too when I search. Now, I'm scratching my head because I've had 80 series before on an 84 Trans Am and it was nothing like the supposed 40 series that's on my 82. We are talking a huge difference. The 80 was much quiter. This thing on my 82 is rediculous and the muffler shop charged me for a 40 series and even suggested that since I was looking for the muscle car sound with my 327. As soon as I get home, I'm getting the paperwork out and investigating this a little further. I never paid much attention to the paper work when I got it beause as soon as I got in the car and started it the first time, it sounded exactly like my friend's '68 Hurst Olds with a 455 and 40 series and that sold me.haha

Re: Pics wanted of 40 series flowmasters

The 80 series comes in 2 different styles, I believe there's an 18 inch and a 15 inch. The 15 inch is more aggressive than the larger 18. Other factors like pipe diameter and catalytic converter effect sound as well, when comparing it to your 82 T/ A

Hmm, well I couldn't find the paperwork anywhere, so I went out and studied it closely and measured it. It's a 15" long case, 4" thick, and about 10" wide. Looks like I have this one:
http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/sh...oducts_id=3298

I think they fooled me, but the funny thing is, it sounds just like a 40 series with my setup. 327, stainless headers, custom 2.5" y pipe, 3" pipe from Y to muffler, and NO cat. I'm guessing that guy at the muffler shop must have realized that he couldn't mount a 40 series in the stock location on a 3rd Gen, so he must have decided to give me the agressive 80 series instead. Think I should call them and complain? This was like back in June.lol

Oh well, I love it. It sounds freakin awesome for an 80 series. I've read so many comments in the past about how quiet 80 series are and don't flow very well, etc...but if this is an 80 series, it goes against everything I've read and it's about 20 times louder and deeper than the 80 series I had on my 84 Trans Am 305 with NO cat.

Well with all the research I've done, I'm looking forward to seeing someone post pictures in this thread of a 40 series in the stock location. Doesn't look like that's possible. Thanks to those who paid more attention than I did! Sorry to the OP, I thought I had a 40 series.

Like I said the 40 is not a crossflow muffler. They do have some with 2 exits on the same side, but not in the crossflow design like a stock 3rd gen mufflers. Even 40's do not sound all that good with cat's IMO, but get rid of the cat/cats and they really wake up.

I had the 40's on my old 90 5.0 Stang with full tailpipes and when I had the 4 cat H-pipe on they almost sounded stock, but when I put the catless H-pipe on WOW, they sounded very mean.

Mine's got single - in - dual out, 40 series..... With my new motor going in, i'm looking into another system. Maybe true duals, if I can find a shop to pull that off around town...

-2nd video was going to be the sound video but i only had a cell phone to take the videos with the sound is really bad sounds like a formula 1 if you ask me (but obviously its very loud and sounds alot like savage388's)

not sure man i got the motor out of a 88 drag camaro and put it into my 83 camaro im not the one that put it in my camaro but the guy that did opened it up and said its clean i know it took out the tranny in the last camaro it was in and i think it might have seen a few shots of nos (some people dont know to run a externally balanced flywheel on 400sbc so that might have done in the last trans)

the only things i know about the motor are the things iv done to it and thats not much demon carb, flowtech header, spark plugs, wires ,cap,3 row champion radiator i have not spent that much time on it but it runs good and burns the tires all the way through 1st gear and into 2nd

Haha pretty much what I know about mine, the po didnt know a damn thing and the car has line locks so it has been raced quite a bit too. Eventually I'll have to find the cam size if/when I change heads so until then I'll be fine.
