Turbo Headers
Turbo Headers
I am brainstorming here while I plan out my turbo build of an 87 RT camaro. I would like to have some hope of sparkplug access and remain compact in the exhaust area. I used to run circle track and we had to run OEM GM manifolds, and the dyno queens said the LT1 camaro/vette manifolds were the best flow in stock form so that's what just about everyone used. They look like this:

I want to do a single turbo setup on the pass side behind the headlights. I was thinking you could flip these manifolds around so the exits are facing the front of the engine. I could run a cross pipe down and under the front of the oilpan up to the pass side and Y the exhaust together. Anyone ever seen a third gen guy try this? Also, with the LT1 style logs how is the plug access on a camaro? I had them on my stock car but it was wide open in the engine bay so it's not a good comparison.
If anyone has any input on the manifolds I'm all ears!

Re: Turbo Headers
Been done before a few different ways. Using manifolds or block hugger shorties flipped up. Definately a good budget way to go with less work.
There was a thread about post your power adder pics and there were a few turbo cars like that

Re: Turbo Headers
The huggers were my first thought but from pics that I saw with them upside down the flange sat pretty high so I don't think it would clear the hood unless you chop the headers down a bit and redo the flange. I'll do a little more searching to see if I can find those pics though.

Re: Turbo Headers
The driver's side manifold exits sort of the back middle, which when you swap sides puts the exit lined up with the passenger side engine mount... in other words, it won't fit.
Re: Turbo Headers
Are you positive, because the set I had on the stock car were identical in design, both exited back past the last cylinder. But if so, that is probably why nobody has done this. I'm thinking shorty huggers may be the plan, and run the exhaust under the motor on both sides and then up into the turbo at the battery location. I'm really not into spending 2 weeks welding and fitting hot pipes. Spark plugs may just have to stay in for 100k miles.
