Either will fit. The 80 series comes in a cross flow design like the stock muffler. I don't believe the 40 series does though, but if don't mind only a single tailpipe, it will still fit. Might have to fab up a custom mount is all.

That is a matter of opinion and you'll get all kinds of answers. It also depends somewhat on the whole exhaust system as different size pipes and performance vs stock cats will change the tone. If you go to flowmasters website, they have a bunch of different sound clip you can listen to. The 40s are much louder than the 80s, so if you've got really strict sound ordinances where you live they might not be a good idea.
Personally, I prefer the sound of the 80 series myself. That's what my camaro had when I bought it. When I put the true duals on though, I switched to a pair of glass packs and I wouldn't go back.

Neither one will make it sound like a weedeater. Its pretty hard to make a v8 sound like a 4 banger.

Which has a tone all its own.
The flowmaster will not make it sound like a v8 or a rice car, but it will give it a drone which can be pretty annoying imo. 2.8's had it already and a flowmaster will only amplify it.
The 40 is not as restricitive as the 80.

I was looking at it from the perspective of the v8 swap. My camaro had the 2.8 when I got it with the 80 series and I didn't notice any drone. Of course, I usually had the tops off and the radio cranked up enough to hear it at highway speeds, which drowned out most of the exhaust noise.

@GageBrand Here is a video of my 350 with 3" exhaust run to a Flowmaster 40 series. You can hear what is would sound something like. Yours would be not as loud as mine though as I am running a built up 350 with a mild cam...but this gives you somewhat of an idea.

a 2.8 or 305 are not going to out-flow either a 40 series or an 80 series. Your intermediate pipe size is going to be a bigger factor there.
I'd go with an 80 series if you are set on Flowmaster, that way you can easily keep the duals look.
I've had both on V6's and V8's, (40's, Delta 40's and 80's), I now run Hooker Aerochambers on everything. Better tone, no drone and they flow way better.
FWIW, an 80 series is basically a 40 series with a wider case and an extra baffle to try and even out the flow to both sides. Flow is similar between them but the 80 will pop and gurgle more because of the change in flow direction. Some people like that.

Re: Flowmaster 40 series or 80?
i like how 40s sound, however they do not come in cross flow which fits our cars in the stock location which i prefer so i have an 80 myself
and for the record iv had both an 80 and a 40 on a 3.1, 80 series 2.25" with no cat sounded like GARBAGE, very high pitched, very raspy, terrible drone
the 80 cross flow with a cat 2.50' pipes, muffler was 3" inlet and outlet with flowmaster tips, sounded very good for a v6, some rasp above 3k rpms, but was NOT high pitched, sounded GREAT at idle but anything other then idle it was obvoiusly v6 sounding but much better then the 40 IMO, but each person has their own opion, look up vids of both to see what YOU like

Re: Flowmaster 40 series or 80?
I have a flowmaster muffler cat back exhaust system, i THINK I have an 80 series, but I'm not sure, as mine is BLACK. It is a 3" exhaust system (3" inlet to the muffler, but 2.5" outlet to dual tail pipes). Is this the 80 series muffler, but for some reason it's black? It was new when I bought it so it wasn't painted by somebody? Thanks!
