exhaust silencer?
exhaust silencer?
I recently moved from Kansas to New York so now I need to get the yearly inspection. My exhaust is too loud though, does anyone have any experience with exhaust silencers? I could only find information about using them on import tuners with a higher pitched exhaust, do they work with the lower frequencies a V8 produces too? I am not really concerned with power loss because I will probably remove them after the inspection. What are some other tricks to quiet exhaust for state inspections?

Those look like a trumpet bell to me... the exact opposite effect from what you're looking for.
The usual solution to your requirements is a relic from the Stone Age known as a "muffler".
NOT ONLY does it make your car pass inspection, BUT ALSO avoids trouble with your neighbors. AND on top of ALL THAT (as if that wasn't enough), usually results in a power output increase, compared to not having one. Really a remarkable piece of equipment.

Right, a muffler. Thank you for the completely obvious reply that didn't help at all.

I was looking for something to supplement the muffler once a year to pass inspection.

Everybody else's cars do just fine with nothing more than a muffler. (and some pipe of course... ) We don't need that other thing. Yours will do the same.

what year? what county? if its before 87 you can get historic plates and get cheap insurance and not be subject to emissions inspection only safety.
and depending where you are if the cops are jerks they will ticket you and make up other stuff while they have you pulled over for the exhaust. best case is to put in cut outs

Weld a glass pack inline with the muffler or get a muffler for inspections.

Re: exhaust silencer?
Several years ago I got caught in Denver with a set of glass packs that were too load. Was told by an old NCO at the base to put steel wool in the tail pipes and put a piece of wire across to keep it in place. It did the trick. Drove the car around Denver for 45 days with the steel wool in place. It will have a tendency to carbon up things but it will blow out when the wool is removed. Just a piece of my memory.....
