header mufflers

Hey guys sorry for being a pain in the a** but I had a quick question. I was looking at header mufflers read about some called hornies. My question is having a muffler right off the headers ok. I know about the sound but what about back pressure in the exhaust. I live in the middle of no where and I'm exempt from emissions so any thoughts?

Re: header mufflers

I had header mufflers back in the day.
Okay for the money and ease of installation, at least in older cars. Not sure if they will fit as stated above.

Are they the best? No. Would a fill exhaust be better? Probably.

Re: header mufflers

I had to look this one up , I thought I had heard it all . the only place I can see them being used is a dirt/rock crawler open buggy . no place on a passenger car . exhaust should exit to the rear of passenger compartment . exhaust gases in an enclosed vehicle have been known to kill people . do not use , good luck .

Re: header mufflers

back in the day I had "Cherry bomb" glass packs on an old Charger I had...they had a 3 bolt flange and bolted right up to the header collector. I ran straight pipe from there to about the rear axle with two turndowns.

It was pretty obnoxiously loud...... -I have no idea how they'd ever fit a Thirdgen and have any clearance...

Header mufflers have been around since the 1960's.
There are literally thousands of cars running around with turndowns in front of the axle, and probably just as many pos's with little to no exhaust.

Back in the day my dad had some on his 55 bel air. He took semi stacks and welded them on the end, at an angle so they cane out in front of the rear tires.

Re: header mufflers

I am running dual purple hornies on my 84 camaro with hedman long tubes, had to get extenders with a ddrop of like 6 or 7 inches but they are about 2.5- 3 inches off the ground. I have to shorten the straight pipes coming out of them, they are dragging the ground under the rear axel, im going to have them exit at the back of the doors.
