Smog/air crap?

I want to clean up my engine bay a little bit was wondering if there's a write up to remove/delete this partSmog/air crap?-image.jpg. I'm not worried about emissions just don't wanna go pulling crap out without knowing what needs to be plugged up and what doesn't.

Re: Smog/air crap?

I took mine out.

You'll need to cap ports on your headers. I belived I picked up some pipe ends at Lowes for this. If you compeltely remove the smog pump you'll need to get a shorter belt and re-route it per the tech article (which is very simple). The belt should be the same as a 2003 Ford F-150 w/ 4.2l V-6, or 96 inches long. I just ordered a Goodyear 4060967 from eBay for like $11. You'll also want to remove the hose going to your cat. It can be a bit of a pain to get out of there. And then you'll want to cap the air inlet tube on your cat. There's a couple wires to control the air valves that I just tucked out of the way in case I ever wanted to go back.

That's really all there is to it.

Re: Smog/air crap?

I took all of that on the left side out. Ac, smog pump, air system, and the heater. You shouldn't run into any problems with deleting it at all. Just do what the above guy said and you'll be fine. If you wanna keep it and get headers, there's systems that will work with it.

Thanks for the info. jichniow.

Hmmm...I'm assuming those wires run back to the ecm, which was controlling this diverter valve? If so, does leaving this disconnected turn the Service Engine Soon (SES) light on?

I haven't had a SES light and I've had the smog pump off for a couple years.

Re: Smog/air crap?

I read somewhere that the stock cat needs the air pump. The air pump provides the O2 needed to burn off the excess HydroCarbons in the cat. Wthout the extra O2 the unburned HCs will go out the tail pipe but also clog your cat as well. You say youre not worried but you have emissions testing in philly.

Re: Smog/air crap?

I have a buddy who works in a shop that helps me out once a year with emissions . But I already have a straight pipe so I'm not worried bout the cat tube. When I pull this out I guess the egr goes too? And do I have to delete the smog pump or can I leave it in without it be actually hooked up to anything.

Your "buddy's" shop can be fined $25000 and lose their license to perform emissions testing if they get caught falsifying emissions tests.

Re: Smog/air crap?

OP, Just follow the tubes that go to the ports on the exhaust manifolds. That box you posted a picture of, pry open the cover and disconnect the two plugs inside it, then you will find the bolt that secures it to the tube coming off the smog pump.

Remember to cap those A.I.R. tubes (or crimp each individual tube really good) otherwise you'll have exhaust coming out of it and it'll sound like a REALLY bad lifter knock.

Re: Smog/air crap?

I passed emissions for Phoenix with flying colors. No smog pump with a modern magnaflow cat. They do not check for emissions equipment. I moved to phoenix from Fairbanks Alaska. Fairbanks they did check for proper emissions equipment. I'm supposed to have a 305 with a smog pump and I have a 350 without... I would have failed. Again no engine light, and the emissions out of my car are lower than original equipment 30 years ago. Keep the egr and the smog pump if you have it. The smog pump takes very little power to run and you won't feel an ounce more power with it off. My case was rust and a bad pump... And being poor when I first got the car, cutting it all off was the lesser of the 2 evils and I was in Oregon and there were no emissions testing... Well 15 years ago anyway.

You don't have to remove the pump, but if you're taking out all the other stuff, then you might as well. Like I said, you'll need a different belt, but that's it.

The AIR system is not related to the EGR. Taking off the smog pump and associated hardware does not affect the EGR system. I'd leave all the EGR equipment in place (valve attached to the intake).
