Dynomax For The Win?

So within the next week, after my 19th B-day( ) I will be having a well known exhaust shop (not enough time with work and school going on) Perform a bad*** exhaust set up. Tomorrow I will post a exhaust video of before. Specs of before. 1991 stock LO3(low mileage, 133k!) Stock mani's with the cat removed, and air plugged u p. from the mani's theres 2 1/4 all the way back to the backwards muffler. Now by backwards I mean (I'll use a single inlet duel outlet flowmaster here for a example) the pipe from the engine is entering the furthest out outlet, and then the inlet is being used as and outlet as well as the other outlet being used for normal outlet... confusing right? So this causes backwards flow, and bad (kinda) performance. Also sounds, different.
New setup. Flowtech Lt's, (do not know part number, got them for cheap) I believe 1 3/4 primaries (Hope I am wording this right) with a 3 inch collector. Then a 3in all the way out with a ebay 'X' pipe, (3 inch on all sides) and Summit Dynomax Race Bullets, p# 24250. I may end up doing 2 1/5 all the way out, but as for now, this is what its gonna hopefully sound like....

https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D0z5lA6a76rY&h=8AQHmWIVa
Will 3 inch all the way through be to much for the stock(not for long) LO3? Can't wait to get it done!!

Re: Dynomax For The Win?

You may need to separate the link from the sentence below it to get it to work.

I would not even consider anything but a 3" including the outlet/tips.

Re: Dynomax For The Win?

Sounds overkill for a 305 tbi. I would wait till you upgrade the engine to start adding long tubes and better exhaust if you can wait.

Do you mean a single 3" pipe (to the muffler and then dual tips) or dual 3" pipes (i.e. true duals?)

because true dual 3" pipes are serious overkill for a 305, and honestly anything that's not pushing 650 hp and up.

If you are going the true dual route, with that engine, 2" or 2.25" would perform the best.

Re: Dynomax For The Win?

But i also have the intention off intake, cam and heads as well as some flat tops and such. kind of a sleeper dealio. Everyone builds a 350, or a ls1... Which isn't bad! Theres a reason why everyone does it. But its gonna be my DD, with track days here and there...

Re: Dynomax For The Win?

I was just thinking I could probably just do a single 3 in y pipe, and then after the pipe gets over the torsion bars i could put the dynomax there, but its gonna be fricking loud, SI could also do a 3 in y pipe, and just one Dynomax bullet, then just y it out the back yeah? Would that work?

Re: Dynomax For The Win?

A 3" Y would work, I've even seen a guy on here who did a Single 4" from the Y to the muffler (I think he affectionately called it a stove pipe lol)

No, it' wouldn't be hard, my exhaust is run like the pics show, dual 2.5" and long tube headers.

My engine is putting out 400+ hp at the moment and the dual 2.5" breathes very well. I just recommend 2 or 2.25 based on how my current set up is.

At the end of the day, if you want dual 3" then it's within your power to make that happen.

The reason I said 3in. is he specified 3in. collectors.
A 3in. collector tapering down to 2.5 did not seem right to me.

Also I believe the 3in. pipe with a 3in. exit pipe will give him a deeper tone.

I’m most defiantly not an exhaust expert but IMO believe that's about right .

Re: Dynomax For The Win?

Ill probably since i already accidently ordered the 'X' pipe, from ebay, So i still may do the duals, but 2 1/5 instead. But i could always sell the X pipe and run a fatty 3 in why and then use two 3 inch exit pipes. That should be just as good as a dual 2 1/2's right?

Re: Dynomax For The Win?

Sorry about my bad spelling and grammar... I could sell the X pipe and run A)
A nice big 3 inch 'Y' into 1 Dynomax bullet, then after the bullet have it split into a dual exit of 3 inch, should exhaust flow out of each side mostly even?
B) Or will it not matter to much? otherwise I'll run the X pipe and 2.25 or 2.5 to the x pipe and out then 3 inch after both bullets all the way out the back...
Which sounds like a better idea?

I think thy both sound great, just need some advice from fellow 3rd gen enthusiasts!! 3"pipes? I am gonna get the muffler and have my local shop do the rest of the work!! So I know its done right!! Thanks for the help!!

Normally a 3" catback set is plenty for a 3rd gen no matter what. But I wanna run different exhaust compare d to carback. They make some bad*** kits tthough! !

I've actually only scraped once, and that was on a really high speed bump (that I went over at an angle come to think of it)

I have about 4 inches of clearance.

Re: Dynomax For The Win?

you are going to have a TERRIBLE time fitting a x-pipe under our cars, most everyone runs a y-pipe. those who run X-pipes custom make them. i dont think you are going to have luck with an x-pipe, let alone a universal Ebay one

Re: Dynomax For The Win?

I thought I would also tell ya that my car doesn' have a cat. The guys who had her before me took it all off and just welded a pipe where it was. They were trying to get as much hp as possible. The guy said he used her for drifting. (cringe) lol

Re: Dynomax For The Win?

Sorry I havent replied these last couple days, cant decide on what exhaust i am gonna completely do just yet, but since its so late where im at right now im just gonna post a few pictures in the morning an a video of the bottom end of my car and how the exhaust is right now, depending on another friends kit for his 77 lt, i may or may not be using the x pipe. The video will show the route i will mostly likely use for true duals. But i may end up gettin a magnaflow catback, or something instead, I just cant decide. I know a 2 1/4 duals flows more than a 3 inch y pipe catback system, but will it be cheaper than true duals possibly? And I love true dual sound, but since gm gave pencils to some monkey to design the floor boards and such its a little hard without any frame mods or nothing, (give or take crossmembers and such) But you guys can help me decide tomorrow!

Re: Dynomax For The Win?

Heres the exhaust pics.
The y pipe for the manifolds
Through the crazzy route
Where the cat was, and hopes X pipe will be put!
By the driveshaft and such
Another further shot of driveshaft
Over the axle
The others ones Ill post later, they are just the muffler and another cat area shot. But 2.5 is definitely manageble and 3 inch Dnomax's! Right? For some reason it wont show the pictures... I apologize for my stupidity on here again...

Re: Dynomax For The Win?

Okay so I made the decision! I ordered Hookers 2460HKR shorties, and a single 3 inch dynomax, y pipe all the way out. It'l be a little more cost effective since I found out how much the shops were charging to do true duals on a third gen.. (racists ) So all I am waiting for is the muffler and then itl be sweet! Ill try and get a exhaust clip before hand.
