Long tubes fit with tubular k member?
Long tubes fit with tubular k member?
1987 iroc z28. Just picked it up for my kid. I will start a build thread soon but am adding some parts so I have something to show you guys.
Unfortunately it needs a new k frame. I want to go tubular and I would like to run long tubes.
If I run the umi k member would the long tube headers fit? I have read what it takes to get the long tubes into a stock car, I was hoping the tubular k member would of taken care of all those issues. I will be building a custom exhaust and I have no emission requirements where im at.
Thanks for the help. Here is a pic of the car when we picked it up. Car is solidly straight minus the drivers door. The interior is perfect minus the headliner. Unfortunately it doesn't have the factory 305 in it. they replaced that with a 350. At least they kept the Tuned port though.

Kid wants to go for a low wide stance. It will be midnight black by the time im done painting it. I have built a few vehicles and cant wait to get on this

In all honesty I would think any Tubular k-member would give you MUCH more room for headers. Your clearance problems will probably be more towards the sub frame.

The UMI k member will drop right in..giving you lots of room for the hooker 2210 longitude.and others....
(Thats one of the perks of the aftermarket k member. )

Re: Long tubes fit with tubular k member?
figured while the k member was out, doing the headers then would be the best shot.
Any thoughts?

Re: Long tubes fit with tubular k member?
RIGHT NOW there is a set for sell in the parts for sale. sec on this site.
the 2210s are some of the better made/size.. right now 1 3/4" tubes to a 3" collecter is the largest made that are always in stock. and under$500/ $800.. the custom 1 7/8 tubes are even more spendy..
a single 3" is fine for the 350/400hp eng ball park..and the best bang for the buck.
you can get a bolt on set up to go with your headers for $$450 to $600..
dont bother with the dual 2.5"
they even make 3.5/4.0" single back set ups.. spendy but they do work..
im hoping a header maker. will make a set for 1 7/8" tube headers that are made to work with a aftermaket k member. so they can move them a bit. making more for room. only time will tell.

Thank you for the info. Im going with a true dual because i dont think anything sounds better then a dual setup with a crossover pipe. Nothing beats that noise...
Thank you. Thats the route we will go.

Re: Long tubes fit with tubular k member?
Considering that most of the aftermarket K-members are to allow greater clearance I don't think you'll run into any problems.
I have the 2210's on my GTA with the factory cross member.
There was definitely some swearing involved.
I had to do the following:
Reroute both front left and right brake lines, even now that I have room, they are close enough that I'm considering a way to put a small heat shield near them.
Reroute knock sensor from passenger to driver side.
swap to LT1 starter or mini starter.
Reroute starter positive cable
I have a LT1/T56 swap, so I have more room by the collectors, but I still had to reroute alot to make it fit.
