magnaflow

Hi

Been doing a lot of reading these past couple of days. My car is all stock and plan on keeping it that way for now at least. I do want to change the exhaust. I'm looking at going with magnaflow all the way.( Y-pipe -cat-catback ) my question is will I loose low end torque by going with a bigger pipe .
Thanks

Re: magnaflow

Nothing noticeable. Just better sound, more power if anything.

Re: magnaflow

If your car already has the 3" cat back, then no.

You will pick up 5 to 15hp with the y-pipe and cat-back vs stock.

I have the y-pipe, 3" cat, and cat-back from Magnaflow on my 89 GTA, BTW.

Re: magnaflow

I'd advise keeping your stock converter, at least store it somewhere. The aftermarket converters are pretty much junk from the four that I've had (two different brands.) Some HP increase and nice sound to be had though.

Re: magnaflow

Can't really suggest anything at this point. Looking for a new one myself. Getting ready to redo the exhaust since my y-pipe started rotting out and the catback is getting way too loud. Hopefully someone else will chime in with a recommendation.

Re: magnaflow

I'm running a magnaflow cat and muffler. (a 3" cat modded to 3.5, and a 3.5 race muffler) The sound is quality, has a great tone and depth of sound. Just if you want loud this is NOT the exhaust. Mine is about as open and flowing (Custom) as you could build. And seriously off the gas it is just plain quiet. Had a a flowmaster 40 series before that sounded so much more aggressive it's not even funny. However I have had way more complements on the sound of the magnaflow than I ever had with the flowmaster.

Magnaflow stuff is as well built as anything out there, you really can't loose as far as quality. If you want aggressive sound, there are better options, but not better performance, or quality IMHO.

Re: magnaflow

The sound and quality is second to none with magnaflow. The hp gain however wasn't motive able IMO.

Re: magnaflow

I went from a Aerochamber muffler to 3" magnaflow catback and at first, I was unahppy because it is quieter with a much smoother sound However, when just cruising, the sound is more mellow and easier on the ears (I commute 20 miles one way). When opening it up, she still roars and it's really growing on me.

What are you running for headers?

Re: magnaflow

I'm impressed with the quality and strength of the Magnaflow cat.

I had a guy basically run me off the road onto the concrete medium that caused the cat to drag on top of it for at least 50 feet.

You could see the scrape marks on the bottom of it but has been fine for 7 years now.

Re: magnaflow

Just a quick question. I ordered my magnaflow cat back. Should be here tomorrow. Next month I'm going to order the magnaflow y-pipe. I'm going to keep my stock cat since theirs nothing wrong with it at this time. My question is. Are their any gaskets that I need to buy and replace while installing these. My car is in storage for the winter. I'm buying all my parts now to have ready to install in the spring

Re: magnaflow

No gaskets.

It would be a good idea to replace the y-pipe and cat together as it can be a nightmare to separate the cat as it pretty much heat welds itself to the end of the Y.

Re: magnaflow

I would not place a 26 year old CAT in my brand new system anyway. The
Magnaflow CAT is a strong "quality" piece that can be had with 3in. ends/end if necessary.

Re: magnaflow

Thanks for the input. Figured It would be ok. Yes it's 26 years old but only has 32,000 Miles on it.
