Mildly blown l98 exhaust options

Mildly blown l98 exhaust options

I have a 1989 Firebird Formula 350 (Car in signature) that is in desperate need of an exhaust... but I don't know how much it needs/has now and could use some advice on short or long tubes, and overall size. The car is a cruiser, and I have started running Autocross with it. I'm not concerned about class, just having fun.

The engine is stock internally other than an XR270R cam, and of course about 6 lbs of boost. Maybe more. It's got the small pulley on it but I haven't set up a boost gauge yet. Factory 882 heads. <---On the to-do list.

I have what I believe are a generic set of rusty Hooker shorty headers I got off a parts car (400SBC) years ago. Would these be a good start, or should I be considering the long tube option? Is a single 3" too small?

Budget holds a great deal of priority, followed by volume. All out performance isn't mandatory, but I know I'm losing some top end running the factory setup. With this build, where is my middle ground?

92 - That wasn't very smart of me now was it... Must have read and retained the wrong thing. Never the less, it is the factory engine, and they are the factory heads. This is why I'm here, thanks for the catch.

No new tires - Weiand 144 mini blower with a leaky 750 Holley on top.

I could have that number wrong too, but I'm fairly sure it's still an l98. Year and model match up, and its a roller block with the 87 and up intake bolt pattern.

If you are referring to my lack of TPI then yes, I did do a conversion, but the block ID still remains the same.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this one.

And if anyone wants to chime in on exhaust that's fine too. When people ask, I tell them I have at least 200 horsepower, so lets use that as a starting point. Will I see any gains over the factory system with shorty headers and a single 3" system, or would my money be better spent elsewhere?

Longtubes would help some but that combo is mild enough to get away with shorties. Combo could use abit better heads and upthe boost if possible lol

Better heads, LONG tubes and more boost (and mabye a bigger blower too)
