hissing sound at moderate throttle

basically thats it... the car is a 92 3.1 v-6... it has been sitting for a while (almost a year while at the body shop)... just idling it sounds normal for a straight pipe exhuast (sounds like a porsche on steroids)... when you get into the throttle it makes a very noticable hissing sound... It doesn't seam to have the power it used to but I am used to driving a v-8 tpi... makes me think the cat is starting to clog up... any other thoughts???

thats the first thing I looked for... no leaks... it is comming from the rear of the car, out of the tips...

my fuel pump makes a hissing sound.

maybe its a bad valve seat that is allowing exhaust to leak out?

it sounds nothing like the fuel pump (i would call that more of a buzzing sound)... it sounds like you plugged off all but a small amout of the exhuast outlet creating a high pressure situation in the exhuast system and all of it trying to get out of the small hole... I can hear it most with the rear hatch cracked open (tried listening to it through the side windows individually) and it is definately comming out the exhuast tips... no kinks or leaks in the pipes from front to rear... anyone ever had this happen???

ps. I definately thing the power is way down... I was thinking it might be the O2 sensor dieing but I have almost convinced myself its the cat...

Its possible that you have a restriction in the cat, sometimes when the element inside it starts to break into smaller pieces it can get wedged in the exiting side of the cat. Try crawling under the car some morning when its still cool and hit the convertor a few times to see if it rattles.
