Fair price to finish exhaust?

How much should I expect to pay to have a shop finish my exhaust? i really just need a y-pipe fabbed up from my shorty headers to right around the passenger floor board where the rest of the factory exhaust is. A local shop told me $400 which seems way high for what I would think to be a fairly small amount of exhaust.

If it's a quality piece, $400 might be a fair price. Takes some time and effort to do good work.

$400 for some crimped pipe tacked together is a different story.

Still seems kind of high to me. A few years back after putting long tubes on my c4 I had the rest of the exhaust done true duals for about $400 ( I provided the x pipe and mufflers)

Re: Fair price to finish exhaust?

It depends on the work, for a real quality piece and if you want anything special 2-3x that might be reasonable. $400 isn't at all out of line for a cheaper job around here, but that could be for crimp bent stuff or mandrels, it's the same amount of work for either just a difference in supplies and ability. OTOH, if you find someplace that can actually mandrel bend the whole thing then go back to my first sentance...

If you are talking standard exhaust shop standard bend steel tubing, that is high.

If you are talking SS mandrel bent tubing, Thats a pretty good price.

Re: Fair price to finish exhaust?

Two of the first upgrades that is suggested is to replace stock components with those that allow the car to "breath in" and "exhale" much better than stock.
Sooo... having headers is a big step in that direction.

What size "Y" pipe ?

To the factory "stock" system ?

Not sure-whatever size is needed to finish the gap. The rest of the exhaust is stock though I do have a muffler I'll eventually swap in place of the factory one.

Just for the fun of it you can go to "Summit Racing" = http://www.summitracing.com/
or
"Jegs Performance"= http://www.jegs.com/?CAPCID=24630916...FY9eQgodxCcAWQ

and type in your car and check out some of the exhaust systems they carry.

Summit Racing is a extremely good place to shop for after marking parts.

On larger parts there is a handling fee usually around $10.00 and a oversize fee of about the same. That's $20.00 to the door.
No shipping cost and they have never charge me TAX.

Any questions including technical is handled over the phone by people that are competent.
