So the other day the insides of my cat broke apart and causes a rattling sound. Eventually the pieces caused a blockage and now the car doesn't run right and has huge amounts of back pressure. My plan is to cut off the cat so I can drive the car to a muffler shop and have them weld in a straight pipe. My question is, I can see that there is a line running into the side of the cat which from what I understand is the smog hose that pumps air into the exhaust. Can I do a cat delete and leave the smog equipment in place without any issues? Is it ok to have that line is still pumping air but not attached to the exhaust? Will it affect the way it runs? The car is an 86 Trans am.

 

what you suggest can be done . cut off the cat. o.k. , have a muffler shop weld in a straight pipe . that would be illegal for them to do . they would be risking the loss of their license . the line going to the cat. ? cut it off , will hurt nothing . all you want to do sounds o.k. except for muffler shop . now they could sell you a section of pipe to replace cat. and you could install it . also if your in an area the has smog cks./insp. you might need to re-think your plans . you could drop it down & out, take a long piece of pipe and a big hammer,...knock out the "honeycomb" inside the cat,(gutted cat), then bolt everything right back where it was and nobody would know.
would it pass emissions? IDK? you never mentioned what state you live in. maybe why you were asked to complete your profile?

 

Just call the exhaust shop and ask, they might do it, shop i used didn't even mention a cat when I got full exhaust.

 

another person with no profile , oh well . was your shop licensed ? if so they did risk losing it and a big fine . its a federal thing , not a local . what was your car a YUGO , PRIUS , or perhaps even a 3rd. gen ??? put up your profile , good luck ...

 

Thanks... I know that the shops around here will do the straight pipe and the car does not have to pass inspection so that's not a concern. Good to know that I don't have to worry about the smog line!

 

If u don't need inspection just get rid of the cat , see if the shop will do it, don't worry about if the shop could get a fine or lose their license, if you don't own the shop, don't worry about it, let the shop worry about it. There's always going to be those "uncle toms" out there. Yea by law you can't remove it, but if u have no inspection and the shop is willing, that's your call

 

Before you disrespect the "Uncle Toms" out there, realize these are people that spend a great deal of time offering sound advice to many users of this forum, evidenced by the thousands of posts they have put up...

Why not take it to a muffler shop and have them replace the cat? As far as the smog system, SEARCH IS YOUR FRIEND, there is endless info out there on the subject, spend some time and educate yourself on the subject.
