Question about converter and AIR tube
Question about converter and AIR tube
This is my first post so thanks in advance for assistance.
I own a 87 IROC-Z, it was my first car and have had it since age of 13. I'll be 35 at the end of the month so I've owned the car a long time. It has 56000 original miles, been sitting since 03 but did start from time to time through the years. Last time it was started I think was 2011, am getting ready to move and need to drive it to the storage facility until new house is ready.
Storage facility is only 15 miles away so am not too concerned as far as making it there. I was in the process of installing some edelbrock headers I had laying around in 2011, but with life, distractions etc I finally mounted the y pipe today.
The Catalitic (spelling) converter won't slip into he tailpiece of the pipe due to previous installer using a clamp causing a ridge in the flange. Also I plan on changing the fuel filter and depending how much gas is in it power up the pump to drain it through the line.
Now to my main question, sorry about the back story.
Will removing the cat with the air tube unhooked cause any issues with drive ability for the short distance I'm going? I have a cat back system to go on it but am gonna bring it to an exhaust shop when things get settled in at the new place. It's the hooker cat back system. Bought it years ago and is still in the box.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Question about converter and AIR tube
If you're talking about driving with an open y-pipe, you should be fine for about 15 miles. Wouldn't want to drive it on the interstate without earplugs though! I believe the shorter exhaust will result in a loss of low end torque, which shouldn't hurt much.
I cut my exhaust off right after the cat and drove it around the block a few times. Didn't notice any issues, but never got over ~10mph and only drove for about 5 minutes. Watch out for the cops; dunno about your area but out here (Boulder CO area) they can and WILL ticket you hard for a "defective" exhaust.
Flushing the old fuel is definitely a good idea. Best of luck getting your car back on the road!

I just hate loading it onto a flatbed, sits so low I'm always afraid something is gonna get messed up. At the same time getting pulled over with 03 tags and loud noises might not be a good idea either.
