hey mark ive noticed youre a serious promoter of the hooker exhaust systems, and i think you'd be the guy to answer my question. im sure you've heard an 80 series flowmaster, and with mine especially i hear alot of grumbling and popping upon deceleration (like when you nail it in first gear, and then let it idle down by itself, or when you rev it to 5k in park). now, with the hooker, is it the same situation? im not really liking the glasspack like sound. i also got rid of my cat, and my flowmaster sounds really hollow. i know i need headers to help my tone, but do the hookers idle down with less popping and grumbling then the flowmasters?

My Hooker cat-back never pops/grumbles like Blowmasters. I dont think Mark's exhaust sounds anything like all the other Hooker Cat-backs I've heard (I'm not saying that it doesnt sound good ...his sounds great). My car also sounds nothing like glasspacks. That gragleing sound you hear in all the clips is cause of the recording since the exhaust is so loud.

Great examples of Hooker's sounds are:

http://www.members.home.net/dcornacchia/car1.mp3 - this clip is very short but it sounds perfect. No distortion at all.

No converter and Flowmaster don't make a good combination. I know there are people with Flowmaster out there that don't get what u are getting.

I've always heard that popping sound made by flowmasters. And you have to remember I have a NON hi-flo replacement cat on there, so that might be affecting the sound. I don't notice any popping with mine, soon I'll be putting on a new intake, anyone think that will help the sound of my car.

could it be that im running a bit rich that i get the gargling sound? i mean, maybe the flows with no cats give off that sound as it is, but if im running rich could i have unburned fuel in my exhaust to add to the sound? is there any exhaust that has more of a low grumble as opposed to the high pitched squeal of the flows? thanks

My friend's Z28 with gutted cat and Flowmasters pops on decelaration every single time. Plus they're loud at idle but when he revs it they dont get much louder.

My Dynomax gargles and pops on deceleration. I've always thought it was be cause the cat is gutted.

I know for a fact it doesn't happen on ALL Flowmasters. I've heard them myself enough to know that already.

My flows pop if I rev it above 4 grand when its in park and cold. If I drive it cold its fine. I never get popping on Deceleration.

Once the cars warm, there is no pop what so ever when revin it.

I'm running a Flowmaster system with a High-Flow Catback, and I get popping when I rev to 5000 RPM...

Also, when I'm doing fast acceleration and let off the gas, it will pop as it comes back down to 1000 RPM, I love it.... I always thought it was native of Flowmaster, but maybe not.

The popping noise is backpressure. With the cat off its going to be more evident because the cat naturally quiets things. If you want a nice deep tone go with turn downs. I have turn downs on my duals with flowmasters and no cats and there is practically no back pressure. Especially with the balancer pipe. It sounds great at real low rpms. reeeeel deep. With headers you will here header ping with kinda gives it a camy feel.

All this talk about Hooker Aero-Chambers just makes me wanna get my car back together and make sounds of it with long tubes and dual 3" exhaust using Aero-Chamber mufflers dumped at the rear.
