My 88 with Magnaflow

Here’s a video of my 88 with Magnaflow.. I really like how it’s quiet at Idle but growls when you get on it..

Stock 305 with manifolds..

Went to a custom exhaust place and was overwhelmed with choices.. they said Flowmaster would be louder if I wanna try that down the line.. I’m happy right now..

Re: My 88 with Magnaflow

I've had a Flowmaster and a Magnaflow. Stick with the Magnaflow. The only thing I don't like about the MF are the hillbilly exhaust tips. I had factory looking tips grafted on - and it even sounded better!

Re: My 88 with Magnaflow

I might do the factory style bent and cut pipes someday..

I had big, crazy tips before from previous owner and my exhaust guy showed me that from what I have now to factory would just be a plain pipe pointed down and cut.. I got to see what each scenario would look like and I liked the chrome strainght and flush with the bumper (no longer protruding)

He was showing me how what I have now follows the lines of the body and it looks really good from the side.. from the back you can’t see the tips sticking out anymore.. said if I go back there he can do factory style for $80

I do like the Magnaflow sound and dynamics.. I had a Flowmaster and enjoyed it when I was 17-24.. it’s louder and also a good growl..

Sounds really good, it'll give the nice lines of your car some appropriate sound with it. Gotta like Magnaflow, stainless but not priced like a Corsa or Borla bill.
And Mario is a great spokesman!

Thanks.. yeah really happy with the MF but Mario Andretti is not who I’d picture to be their spokesman.. but OK

I always liked Borla too but not super into the quad tips or the price.. This seemed pretty close to that sound.. I like SLP too.. I loved how the 4th gen Camaro SS sounded with the SLP system..

The magnaflow is more quiet than the flowmaster at idle but sounds plenty loud under throttle. I like it man it sounds great.

Re: My 88 with Magnaflow

Thanks, I’m happy with it..

I do like the Flowmaster at low Idle. When the RPMs drop the MF is so deep you can barely hear it which can be a good thing..

A lot of exhaust videos are with headers / cammed cars and such so I wanted to have one up with stock manifolds.

Re: My 88 with Magnaflow

I'm definitely looking at a y-pipe back MF system. I keep thinking about headers but I haven't pulled the trigger on that just yet. I'm hoping mine sounds like yours. I have the 350 though. What did you end up spending on that system?

Re: My 88 with Magnaflow

I got all custom pipes from Lou’s Custom Exhaust near me. My cat went bad so I got everything taken out.. I got custom exhaust welded in and got my huge chrome tips removed.. he found smaller exhaust tips and matched the lines of the body.. told me if I want to change anything just come back and tweak whatever.. The P.O. said that the muffler was Magnaflow, but shop said it was some knockoff Flowmaster.. It didn’t sound bad but since I was there making changes and welding we tried out some things.. He told me the MF would sound a million times better than what I had..

I was psyched to hear it..

I ran me about $500 and took an hour.. I didn’t need The intermediate pipe.. I know the MF catback system can run around $500 just for the system.

Sounds great! I'm in RI/MASS and noticed you went to Lous. Which Lou's did you go to? I'm in need of some custom piping for my truck.

Re: My 88 with Magnaflow

I went to Lou’s in North Reading.. it was hard to find but they have a couple bays around the side of a building.. Super nice guys there.

I had gone to Lou’s in Waltham years ago and that’s a bigger shop where they do more than just exhaust.. I brought my old Tahoe there when I got a quote to fix a pipe that had a bunch of cats and sensors.. Dealer quoted $4000.. Lou’s made a custom section of pipe and welded it in for $100 and it lasted the life of the truck..

Re: My 88 with Magnaflow

Chazman,

The only thing I don't like about the MF are the hillbilly exhaust tips.

My thoughts exactly. It sounds pretty good with the Crazy red neck teenager megaphone tips. I am going to do the same thing you did and have factory looking pipes, albeit maybe a larger diameter, installed. The Magnaflow tips look like an afterthought.
