So I have an 89 with a 305 TBI and want to delete the smog pump. Was wondering what size bolt I could use to plug the holes in the exhaust manifold. I was reading that you can weld them shut but I do not have a welder. Thanks in advance
Eh I just used brass plugs NPT plugs and they worked fine for the year or so before I pulled all that junk off and installed Dyno Don headers.
At $28 for 10 of those inverted flare fittings I think I would live with some leakage. Which honestly if you gorilla those soft brass NPT plugs in there they will conform and they aint going to leak.
Sure it's not "right" but then neither is deleting the AIR system and the RIGHT way to do this is with some proper headers.
Now I did not do this...a PO of my car did, My pipes are cut right at the nut and the hole is filled with Epoxy. I am to assume they could not break the nuts loose. I would rather have the plugs that can be bought but I have had the car for over 3 yrs and it has not blown out nor does it look horrible as it is a clean cut with no pipe sticking out. This is not the proper route to go but if you can't get those nuts loose I guess this does work.
By the way, regardless of what you use to plug the manifolds, those fittings ARE NOT NPT. They are 1/2"-20 straight thread (bolt thread)...
Does not matter. Brass is soft enough that it seals up just fine. And who is going to put the tubes back on? No one. So if the threads get buggered it doesn't matter. This just a short term solution before they get ripped out and headers get installed.

That was just a F.Y.I.
I don't plan to put headers on this car, and while I hope I never have to re-install the AIR tubes, it can be done...
