Muffler question borla, flowmaster, slp )1 into 2 or 1 to 1
I have a 89 camaro with a 5.7L TPI. Doing crane cam 2032 and other stuff. I already have ceramic short tube headers and no cats and been deciding between flowmaster series 80 or slp.
here's the deal. I just want the muffler. I like how some of the borla sound like the s type. My question is would the car sound better with getting rid of the duals and weld a muffler of choice and dump?

Flowmaster is antiquated. It's a pretty bad choice in terms of performance.
Dual out mufflers are for looks. A single pass muffler gives more performance. The less horsepower your engine makes the less these details matter. In other words give more thought to it if you're at 350 horsepower then if you're at 150 horsepower.

give me some ideas please.
I've go a borla s-type adjustable cat back for sale. Stainless steel with about 3000 miles on it and its been sitting in my garage collecting dust needs polished up. $500. Not sure where your located or what shipping would run you but It's $1000 new.

I really like borla sounds. A vid of a iroc with borla s type and it sounded loud and throaty.
any one have any vids of an iroc with 1 in 1 out muffler?
I'm agreeing with quicktrip. Unless your'e making at least 300 at the wheels as long as your exhaust tubing diameter is sufficiently sized you don't need to even think about what muffler flows better, Mandral vs traditional bending, X vs H pipe or true dual vs single. If you think the Borla sounds better (they do sound nice) then buy a Borla. If you prefer one exhaust tip then just buy a single in and single out muffler. FWIW I think that Magnaflow is the same quality and close to the same sound for much less.

For the muffler to go where the catalytic converter was it would have to be pretty thin, more of a glass pack style or resonator style. You would also be making the car louder if you removed the cat and only used that muffler. Catalytic converters actually help quiet a car down. At the moment I'm really considering adding high flow cats to my car to help quiet it down and remove some of the exhaust smell.

when I did my headers and y pipe I had them delete the cat. I still in process of doing the crane 2032 cam, valve springs, roller tip rockers and want to open the exhaust up a little. Worse case I can go with a borla muffler that is similar to the flowmaster 80 series.

You won't be sorry you went with a Borla and it looks so much better with dual exit pipes rather than the one exit pipe. Of all the exhaust systems I've had, and I've had most, Borla is hands down #1.

are you talking about the borla xs pro muffler? Or the xr1 race mufflers?

Mine was a 1 in 2 out and was on my last car when I bought it. I didn't ever know the part # but it sounded good. Better than my 3in flowmaster system im running now.

Here's some general information I cut and pasted from an old post of mine. It's not a specific answer to your question but should shed some light on the matter.
Tests done years ago and all over the internet regarding muffler and pipe flow along with HP capabilities of different sized pipes. Since we’re mainly talking a single 3” system and 80 series mufflers, I threw this together for this post. It’s the flow of a straight 3” pipe and the calculated drop of about 20% with the typically bent exhaust pipe. This is based on figures for a “zero loss”. If you’re making any more than the HP listed below, look elsewhere or you’re going to lose power – especially the further away you get away from the zero loss point.
3” Straight Pipe flows 878 cfm or enough for 410HP per STRAIGHT pipe
There’s about a 20% drop in flow with mandrel exhaust system bends – approximately 700 cfm which is enough to support 325HP per side (650HP duals)
Flowmaster 40 Series (2 Chamber) 43040 --- 392 cfm (183HP per muffler)
MagnaFlow, Borla Sportsman, and Dynomax Ultras all will flow more than a straight 3” pipe, so a single muffler will show no loss at all on a 325 HP engine.
The 40 series above will flow more than the 80-series. As you can see in the picture below, the dual exit pipes takes up over a third of the 80-series muffler volume - so the actual muffler size is something like 6-wide x 10-long x 5-deep. So it’ll start robbing a little power on less than a 180HP engine. It’s a terrible performance muffler, but admittedly sounds pretty good at idle.
So, if you’re making more than 180HP and care about performance you might want to consider just about anything other than the 80-series Flowmaster. If you’re making more than 325HP, you need to consider going larger than a single 3” system also.
I ran a single 3” DynoMax Ultra system on my old IROC (3" in dual 2.5" out) running 12.3’s. It didn’t hurt things that much at that power level. However, later when I sprayed the thing, it literally whistled going down the track as that single 3” system was choking the living crud out of it
