Engine heat

My 89 iroc has headers and I find there is a fair amount of heat under the hood. Summer in BC can get quite hot so I was thinking of heat wrapping them. May have to take them out to do it. Is it worth the effort. Thanks

Re: Engine heat

If they are cheap mild steel headers, they will burn out from trapped heat but stainless steel headers will handle it and you could wrap those.

That's an urban legend. I had a pair of Hooker 2210s that were wrapped for about 7 years and they held up just fine.

Although I myself live in the Mojave Desert I would disagree with you on what you think qualifies as "hot" when you're 1300 miles North, the ambient air temperature doesn't mean anything for the headers. Using unwrapped headers isn't going to result in harmful underhood temperatures. You can wrap them if you like and I would recommend the titanium lava rock header wrap. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/d...SABEgI5LPD_BwE Somewhere in the archives I did a write up of it with how I wrapped them and how much I used. I did seem to lower the temperatures under the hood and the surrounding items didn't seem to get as hot.

Re: Engine heat

Or watch the classifieds for a nice set of ceramic coated ones... They make a big difference... Sets pop up with a lot of $avings compared to retail... I have Jet Hot coated Hooker 2055's and happy with em... I got them cheap too, Jet Hot had a before Christmas clearance years ago and wanted to get rid of them, I think I paid just under $500...

Re: Engine heat

I heat wrapped some mild steel Cyclone headers and they burnt up at the collector after about a year, swapped those out for stainless steel SLPs with the same heat wrap and no problems ever again with over 20 yrs of service...
