I bought the $48 Catco 3" from Summit, too.
The universal 3" doesn't have a flange on either end. It's made to weld-in or slip-fit. I had the muffler shop weld a three bolt flange on the "out" side of the cat to make it easier to get the exhaust off.

Too be honest id suggest u have someone else do it. I really dont know how knowledgeable u are behind a welding machine. U can make a hole if its too hot or just ruin it. Let the experts handle this one.

yeah thats ur best approach, if i were u id get the direct bolt on, if u buy a universal 3 inch catco ur gonna need a 14" in length pipe cause the cat is short, so get the bolt on. unless u have the money its all up to u.
