Hi all, I was wondering what others have used as a replacements for the N10 exhaust option. The original catalytics on my '91 Camaro had failed and the originals are no longer available, I was looking at aftermarket replacements and found Magnaflow 23479 that was complete with the Y-pipe and 2 catalytic converters. This system was advertised to be a direct fit replacement and with the endorsement of Mario Andretti, I made the purchase. This system was not a direct fit by any means. Extensive modifications to the Y-pipe was required in order to make it fit. With that a side, I was happy with it until I started to hear rattling. At first I thought it was a loose shield, I brought it to my mechanic and confirmed that the rattling was not due to a loose shield, it was rattling inside both catalytic converters. I had purchased and installed this system in 2015 and had only driven 3000 kilometres since the install. I called Magnaflow and they are giving me a bit of a hard time because I am outside of their warranty period ( 5 years). I had paid a lot of money for this system and now it's useless. I did some research (which I should have done before I purchased it) on some message boards including Thirdgen.org about Magnaflow Catalytic Converters, and to my surprise, many others had the same rattling issues. I will never purchase another product from Magnaflow.
What other options are available ?

 

There are several options available, but from what I have read, none of them fit properly without extensive modification. I would just weld in two new cats and call it a day. I have never had any trouble out of any magnaflow cat. Maybe you just got a pair that was made on a Monday?

I used a Catco dual cat system years ago. It fit fine and I had no issues with it. It doesn't look like Catco offers the dual cat system any longer though.

I just checked Rock Auto and they have a stock replacement dual converter system made by Bosal. I have no experience with it, so no idea of fit or quality.

At this point, since you already have the piping fitted up to the car, I agree to just cut the existing converters out and weld in new ones.

Yep. They're corporate entities of the same group. If you look close at the Rock Auto photo, the cats even have Magnaflow stamped on them. LOL

 

You are dead on about both being the same. The pics of both systems are identical. Now I need to find replacements that are no linked to magnaflow. lol.

 

I used a replacement setup as well(factory style) and had to have extensive work done on it as well to fit correctly. You can search my name for pictures on the work that needed to be done to make it fit.

I would also agree just adding new cats would be the best bet. Sorry for your luck!

 

Back when I lived in Mpls - TPiS sold Random Technologies High Flow Cats in their catalogue.

 

When You replace the cats do yourself a favor and fix what cause them to go bad.
A converter will last indefinitely unless something goes bad in front of it.
A bad plug, a bad wire, a bad injector or anything causing a missfire.
The converter will take the abuse, it will overheat and destroy itself trying to do it's job.

I installed it oh I would say 2004 maybe 2005 so when I got it then and installed it it went in fine , still on the car now and I installed an SLP exhaust not to long after we installed the cats

 

I installed the same Catco system in 2004 and had no issues either, but it sounds like its not the same product today as it was back then.
