Whats the best sounding cat-back muffler on a Ford?...

Yes, yes, I know, I know, it doesn't deal with GM or thirdgens, it deals with a Mustang (but hey atleast its muscle ). But I had to ask this question for my friend, and I know you guys have great answers, he has a 99 Mustang GT, STOCK. He's thinking of getting a Cat-back muffler. I said automaticly get Flowmasters or Hookers. He said he's looking for a muffler that at IDLE will create just a "low hum." At CRUISING speeds a "loud hum." And at OPEN THROTTLE will create a "fvcking loud @ss roar... that will knock your pants off." He also wants a more deep throat, clear sounding exhaust, not burly, but I told him all of Fords have a clearer sound, GM has the burly sound, due to the firing order or something. Another one of our friends, who has his @ss more up European cars, than ya wanna know, told him to get Magnaflows . But I have not personally heard much about Magnaflow. The good ones I've heard of are Flowmasters, Hooker, Borla, and Dynomax. Oh BTW, he's got dual exhaust stock, so the catback system he gets will also be dual exhaust. And he also said about getting freer flowing Cats, but probably exhaust first. So which exhaust do you think is the best? Which exhaust would sound the best on a 4.6 ltr Mustang, with stock specs? Which exhaust has the sound he was trying to describe? Any help would be appreciated, my friend thanks you.

Back to the topic, I've never really heard anything but flowmasters on Mustangs. But I admit flows sound really nice on those. Of course if he wants sound headers help out a lot too, plus the gain in HP.
But I tell you what, I would have done this if it wasn't for the single exit, which on a dual exhuast car doesn't matter. Is get the Warlock mufflers, they have a flange that you can take off for open headers.

Flowmaster's sound the best on Mustangs they give it a sweet tone all through the RPM's. Tell him to get a off road h-pipe too.

The X-Pipe is becoming popular, my brother just got one.

FWIW, Magnaflows kick ***. I have a friend with a 90 LX with headers, X-pipe, and Magnaflows and it sounds beautiful. I think those or Dynomax would give him the sound he's looking for, a low rumble instead of the "chambered" sound.

Tell your friend to get a Basani system and end it under the car. All my friends are mustang guys and im the only chevy guy at the school, anyway, one of them has a nice fox body with this system and when he starts it up you can feel the vibrations run through you. When its driving, all you can do is stare. Very nice system.

Ok all of you be quiet!

MAC exhaust products OWN the mustang market.
My best friend has a Stang and has had one for a few yrs now, hes the one that got me into muscle cars in the first place so i've seen him go through all of his mods and seen them track tested
except for the Mac catback since he installed it when he got it
He had a 3-4 tenth gain simply from the h-pipe. Foxbodys had 2 precats and two aftercats. He gained another 2 tenths from the headers he runs a 13.8 without ever having the valve covers off and no suspension parts.

Click here to listen to his mac at idle and at rev aswell as a 70kmh pass

Wow, gta-paladin, those two sound files sound great. Nicely recorded, I've heard some cr@ppy recording but that sounds good. I love the sound that Stang makes after it passes you, great. But I still like my Flowmastered IROC better, but thats my preference. Keep the advice and the sound files coming. Thanks.
--but do remember he doesn't have a 5.0, he has a 4.6, and its a 1999, so its possible the exhaust might sound different with the different engines.

If I must really recomend mufflers for a ford it would have to be the Borla XR-1 Race mufflers. Mybuddy has them on his 2001 Cobra. And what you were describing about the sound you want these will do the job just great. They are a little expensive though. But I got my buddy a deal on his mufflers he got them for $150.00 for both. The regular price on them is almost $130.00 for just one. So if I had to recamend mufflers for a ford it would have to be them.

Gta-Paladin I must agree with you that the MAC system does sound nice, but in my own opinion and others who have heard both, the basani system takes the cake. The friend I was talking about has a few different systems. He just purchased the MAC system to use for everyday driving and he decided to use the Basani for autocross. If you heard the Basani you would be in awe. You can literally feel it!

Get a sound file on a site man, and link us up! Love to hear Basani. BTW, you say he has it for autocross, is basani street legal and street operable?

Alright so far the results have come up to... MAC (3 votes), Flowmaster (2 votes), Dynomax (2 vote), and Magnaflow (1 vote). Man I shoulda made a poll, oh well. He can only afford like 500 dollaz tops. So which one of these best describe the sound that he wants? Any others out there?

... he also is getting real picky in the area of rpms, he wants something that would sound rather good in the 2000 (also to the 3000) rpm range. And this is how he wants it to sound... I'll just restate it: "IDLE will create just a "low hum." At CRUISING speeds a "loud hum." And at OPEN THROTTLE will create a "fvcking loud @ss roar... that will knock your pants off." Well thanks again..

I'm glad I finally read Gta's, man I'd thought i'd be the only one....

MAC owns the mustang alright, my buddys stang at 3grand sounds like my car at 6grand there is nothing like MACprod, i like it so much I might get it for my car...They started out as just specializing in the stang market

Those modular motors do not like chambered mufflers. Borla XR-1, magnaflow, MAC, other straight-though design mufflers, also Spintech. These are the most common mufflers you'll see people recommend at mustang sites. Recommend your friend look at this one

I'm getting Mac on my Z here soon as it says in the sig and has for over three months (YES I'm broke!) My friends 86 Z bone stock with TPI sounds 10x meaner than my car...we'll see when I put on headers on my 350! Mac by far for Mustangs and even f-cars. You can't beat their flow unless you go with racing mufflers, in that price range anyway.

1 for vote MAC,
Matt
