Does anyone have a video of what a 82-84 Trans Am with the Factory Dual Muffler Exhaust With No CAT and factory headers sounds like? If so, please share

'Sorry, can't get a clip at the moment. I currently have the intake manifold removed. It's not obnoxiously loud at all. 'Sounds like a typical full dual exhaust system would sound. I thought it was unusual that it was louder than stock before I knew that a previous owner gutted the CAT. I got the entire H.O. exhaust system from a '84 Z-28 parts car...

Oh ok no worries, that’s what I’m looking for. I just want it to be louder then stock but not obnoxiously or annoyingly loud just something you can hear in the background smoothly. I’ve had a 83 with a magnaflow crossflow muffler, no cat and edelbrock headers which sounded perfect, not loud at idle but when you give it gas it would open up. So your H.O exhaust is going to be replace your original dual muffler one?

I just saw it and it’s nice, it’s surprising to see there’s still one out there. I recreated the original GM Dual Muffler exhaust with the same offset mufflers but with newer bigger pipes

The I've had a couple of 82 cars. The intermediate pipe split into two just before the axle and went into two mufflers. The issues was the intermediate pipe necked down to 2 1.5 or 1.75 inch pipes. With out a cat it sounded really good. But there were flow issues!

You know, having a look at it I recall seeing it before. I didn't recall it being OEM though. But still, kinda clever in a way. Flow issues notwithstanding.
Without jamming up the OP's thread too much, one thought I had to alleviate the single muffler predicament was to cross the axle with a single pipe in the conventional (maybe go to 3 1/2" from the y-pipe back) and just after the turn to go sideways, add a split there (2 x 3") and then to two bullet style mufflers in a side by side fashion. It would occupy about the same space as a single rectangular/oval muffler.
It's the flow capacity I'm after. About 900 CFM would do it. Not too loud is the other criteria hence the two mufflers. A 900 CFM single bullet is deafening! Twin 450 would quiet it down.

That picture by Firechicken is of the NOS one currently for sale on ebay. There's also a complete used one on ebay, I-pipe and all.
It was a cool idea, just poorly executed.
If the factory had used larger pipes and been consistent with the size at connections, put the pipe that connects to two resonators in line with the two tailpipes for straight-through flow, and connected the I-pipes to the pipe between the resonators with curves for smoother flow instead of the blunt 90* joints, then that could've been a nice exhaust system.

My 83 lg4 still has the factory exhaust. Running 80mph down the interstate gets slightly annoying but other than that it's pretty tame. Looking at the piping and the size of the exhaust .manifolds I can see why people say the first thing to do is replace all of it. The tpi cars had a much better exhaust system.

Do you have an exhaust clip of it? Does it not have the cat? I would love to hear it! I love the look of the dual mufflers, I’m sure they could’ve figured out a way to make it better flowing with the same design but they stopped making it after 84

The did sound really good and they never rusted. I removed 4 of these exhausts on my cars and the had minimal corrosion. It's a bummer that the exhaust going up to these was so bad. I never measured the pipes but they were like 1.5 inches at best. Maybe even1.25. It was bad.

Yeah? I've always wanted someone to explain the difference between a resonator and a muffler. Especially the difference between a resonator, and a glass packed style muffler. To these eyeballs (and ear-*****) they're functionally identical.
Pretty sure those early F-bod muffs were chambered mufflers. Not glass packed, but I'd welcome seeing one that's been cut open.

I do remember (yea, I know...) those cars sounded incredible, I've considered trying to build a modern version of that that flowed better. I'm not positive what made them so low (frequency-wise), typically smaller pipes would (when tuning for a frequency a larger diameter requires a longer length to tune for the same frequency) but I don't think any of that was smaller than what is found on a lot of V6's. I also wasn't sure how it looked in front of the axle to get to the 2 pipes coming into the middle, I'd only seen the rear section in person.
I don't know if there is an exact definition for a resonator, but typically they are designed just like a straight-through muffler but don't have any packing around the perforated pipe inside and are designed to resonate at a specific frequency, usually to kill drone and not affect exhaust tone too much.

Thanks for the thoughts on that. I hear you, but check this out:
*The device that is located in the middle of the exhaust on the later C4, is frequently called a resonator. It's a 2 in, 2 out, straight through, perforated tubes with fiberglass packing it looks like an oval "muffler", and it does muffle the sound.
*When I built the exhaust for the Kart, I bought an entire used exhaust from a Dodge Magnum. It had two "resonators" mounted near the x pipe, mid exhaust. I chopped 'em out and used both as two mufflers, in the Kart. They are straight through, perforated tube devices, with fiberglass packing.
*I've (somehow) become Park City's premier, Toyota Sienna lift kit installer. That's right, people jack up Siennas. And I help 'em do it. I've done about 15 of them? Or so. Part of the job is hacking out a "resonator" that is located after the muffler. It is a straight through, perforated tube device with fiberglass packing. You can't hear any difference after it's gone. Anyway, all of these devices look/feel/act...a lot like THESE DEVICES Specifically, the ULTRA FLO WELDED ROUND, and the "BULLET" style Muffler. IDK. It's a funny thing. I can understand how a Helmholtz resonator is a resonator....but ^these things^ are mufflers, to me.
