L98 Dual Cats in a Mazda
I have a 1991 TPI L98 in my 1991 Mazda RX-7 convertible and I live in the Peoples Republic of California. I'm building this car to be "smog legal" so I have to swap everything emissions related in order to have the state "certify it" ....... my question is, I'm running dual cats and I know the smog pump diverter has an air line that goes to the catalytic converters. Does this air line just go to one cat? if so which one? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

OMG, you put a 350 in a RX7 that is so sweet :hail:
If you have two cats that have air lines on them, why not put a splitter and feed air to both cats? other wise I'm guessing the air line would probably go to the first cat because it would be the first one to see any un-burnt fuel, so the air should be in that one to burn off the fuel.

Dude.... sweet. I'd only seen 5.0s in those before never a TPI 350. Can you have an engine that is larger than the original one smog certified at all? I think we need some more pictures of that little monster! :lala:

If any one would ever DARE to call you a *****, you should bitchslap them so damn hard that their great grand mother could feel it. I give you alot of props for doin that man! This is the first, and probably the only time Ill say that car (import) FUKIN ROCKS!!!!!!!!

The guy that told you that only one cat had the AIR tube may have been thinking about systems that have two cats inline rather than one cat per tube on two tubes. The in the case of the former, only one cat will need the AIR tube, but for the latter, a tee-junction to feed both will be good.
Again, kickass car.

I guess I should have added this picture of my exhaust in my original post. I never actually seen a GM dual cat set up, but I did assume that it was 1 cat per manifold (like the picture). I'm planning to try to get the car "certified" by the state, so I have to make sure everything is just like the factory F-Body set up. Thanks again for all your help.

Ya, your right JZA, I thought it might have had both in line, now that I know there is one on each side.. both would need air.
I love the pic of the engine..

unf**kingbelievable!!!!!
I love it man :hail:. I about busted a nut when I saw that :lala:. BTW, why don't you fabricate a cold air intake of some sort for it? These engines really wake up with nice cold dense air. In any case, mad props to you my friend

how could you take the rotary out of the car. that is like taking the heart out of it. the wankel gods are now going to curse you and strike you down for your sacralige.
got that out of me now so....
kinda off topic but I tried to ask you in another post and it was locked
how much did a swap like that cost you and what all did you need
I am debating on doing it to a first gen rx-7 when I get some money in being that the cars tip the scales at around 2200 lbs
also how is the weight distro on the car and handling in referece to a stock rotary, and just all around feel for that matter
how come you also didn't go with a tII conversion rather then a v8 swap.
you are one of the guys from the rx7 forum that was flamed for this car weren't you?
also I have to say though that is one nice swap and even though I really dont care for the idea of a rotary being torn out and a V6 put in you did make it look good.

I figure I have about $6,000 into the swap (I didn't really keep track, and the cost was spread out during the conversion)
No RX-7 turbo Convertibles were imported into the US, and to convert my RX-7 Convertible into a Turbo rotary would have been almost as much work, because you have to swap the whole drivetrain. It probably would have been around half cost of the V8 swap but with a turbo conversion, I would still have to get the car "certified" by the state and when all was said and done, I would still only have 200 HP and 196 pounds of torque in a car that weighs 3,100 pounds. (a stock TPI L98 has 245 HP and 345 pounds of torque).
The RX-7 convertible weighs more then a hardtop version, I had the car weighed after and I only gained 130 pounds with the V8 swap and It still handles great, and because of how I built it, I was still able to keep close the 50/50 weight balance that RX-7's are known for.
Basically I wanted a "smog legal" & reliable monster.
But if you want more information on the car you can check out my site:V8RX7.com
