True Duals are Done

I've got them on. I used 2 1/2 inch pipe and glasspack mufflers hooked up to my shorty headers. Sounds great at idle and even better when I get on it. It dropped my clearance to about 3 1/2 to 4 inches but was well worth it.

Good deal! how did you route the pipes? It sounds like you have one on either side if you lost that much clearance. The camaro had the 2 1/2 pipes routed in the stock location with no loss of ground clearance. Now if you were to put air shocks on your car you would probably gain a couple of inches of ground clerance back.

I ran the pipes almost straight back from the headers and they exit about a foot and a half apart in the center of the back. Air shocks are what I was thinkin too. So far the only thing that has rubbed is one of the exhaust clamps. Just gotta avoid all them real real nice speed bumps that people think streets need.

Got any pics? Maybe a sound file you could submit? I'm looking at exhaust options for my IROC and I like what I hear so far. Was it a pain in the ****?

I'll try and get a sound clip up for ya guys. I drove it last nite and one of my straps broke and it bottomed out a lot. I'm definatly gonna be getting some air shocks to give a couple extra inches of clearance. It wasn't too hard to do as long as you can run a welder. I set the mufflers right behind the transmission crossmember, that's what bottoms out and is the lowest part of the setup.

you should have done it like this so it wouldn't bottom out.

Oh yea they help alot, I just removed the air shocks from my tin can of a camaro still good after the crash. I put them on the bird and measured clearances with them and without. I gained 1/2 inch in the front 1 in the middle and 2 in the back thats not set at a very high PSI either.

My parents just told me they would get me them for my birthday thats coming up at the end of March, but they would get them as soon as possible so I don't bottom out for the whole month. Im thinking that Im gonna put some air lift 1000 shocks in the back and in the front just insert coil spring stiffners. If I can get it to raise up 1 to 2 inches I'd be happy.

Well now my dad doesnt think the airlift airbags are good. So Im getting Gabriel airshocks on, I think and spacers for the front. Should be able to make it clear everything. Gotta get them soon so I can quit ripping straps off of my drivers side pipe.

Um if big rigs can support all that weight on a couple of airbags, they should be great for anything smaller.

my frien has an 83 z and had the best routing of true duals I have seen on these cars, clearance wise. Two 2.5 pipes that follow the factory routing with one muffler where the cat is supposed to be and the other in the stock location.

GM makes air bag incerts they go in the coils, HD apps have them in the front coils. They could help but they arent going to give you much of a lift and they wear out fairly qwickly, besides thier $63.80 a piece.

The Gabriels are fairly cheap, $49.99 at AZone.

I had a similar setup on my 85/Z28. I think I'll pull it off and get the pipes from the axle back reworked. (car got rear ended bad)

The only problem is you want the mufflers as close togather as possible to even the flow, mufflers set at equal pipe length from the exhaust manifolds. Its not too big of an issue to dump a little further after the muffler on one side, but the more equality you have the better. That stretch from the center of the car on one muffler and the other at the rear is too big IMO but its better than nothing. I had my glasspacks at the rear and I had to set a good foot of pipe more on the drivers side that the passenger side. It would have help to equal em but there wasent anywhere to do so.

Yea, I questioned the difference in muffler placement too, but that's whyI said Clearance wise. I'd never change from the single pipe anyway. A single 3 inch flows a little less than 2.5 " duals, just because of the surface area being larger on the duals. It's tough to explain, but it does not work lik a single 5 inch pipe flows the same as 2 2.5 pipes, it flows more..

Man I hate to say this but just spend the money for a new set of springs. Airshocks are just a bandaid for weak springs.
