Duel in place of single cat?
Duel in place of single cat?
Hi,
I have an '89 IROC with a 350ci (TPI). I ordered a set of headers and cat back system from Edelbrock and Flowmaster, respectively. Only thing is, my car has only one cat and the shop I ordered from order the duel cat system. I was wondering if I could install those anyway? Would they fit and line up, or would I have to return the system? And most of all, would they pass CA emissions? The system came with a certificate that said that it would would not interfere with emissions laws on a single cat system. I would rather install the duel cats if I can. Also, does anyone know where I can get the A.I.R. pipe (online for a cheap price?)
Thanks,
Mick

Welcome aboard.
If both systems were ordered for dual cat, now all you need are two cats (of the dual-cat type). The dual cat was an option, but I doubt any inspection station would know exactly what it had to come with. My bud out here put a dual-cat system on his '90 RS originally w/LO3, with his ZZ3-SD TPI system. He went through visual and dyno sniffer with no questions asked. My 3" single system technically wasn't offered w/carb, but I doubt it will raise an eyebrow (although I haven't tried getting it through emissions yet).
No clue on the A.I.R. pipe. I could ask my bud where he got his if you like (most likely he got it from the dealer).

Thank you!!! My the other A.I.R. pipe I had was WELDED terribly to the old cat, so I couldn't recover it. I appreciate you looking up the A.I.R. pipe, as I can't seem to find that piece. (Want to avoid dealer as much as possible.)

When Midas welded up my exhaust, they used a high temperature silicon based hose with hose clamps to attach my old AIR pipe to the cat.
The dual in dual out cat should also have an AIR hook up. Midas told me about that. They wanted me to use one of those, so they could build a true dual exhaust. I didn't think that was legal, but they said Colorado doesn't care, all they care about is if it uses a cat. California is tougher than anyone else, so you'd be better off stopping by an emissions testing station and asking.

Having lived in both places, I can tell you that California is no tougher than Colorado. In many ways, less.
I'm away from home for another 10 days, but I'll try to find out about the A.I.R. pipe. Midas, or Kragen, may be a good place to get what you need. Might even find the pipe at a junk yard (they can't sell you the cats, though). I used the high temp hose kit to hook up mine, but I've just got a single cat.
