muffler in place of the cats

would this mess up the flow of the exhaust. I would like to replace my cats with a muffler then run the exhaust out the back with tips.

Has anyone done this? Will the muffler be to close to the headers for it to flow right? or will the pipe from the muffler back be to long?

As long as its a good flowing unit and is small enough to fit into the space ok, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

People with duals do it, why not with a single.

Thats not a bad idea. I wonder what it would sound like with a 40 series 2 chamber flowmaster.

I'm running a 3" shorty Dynomax where my cat was, all 3" from the headers to the pipes. It sounds way different than stock, but very agressive and nice.

I've seen someone do this with their dual setup. Basiclly you run two pipes down the side the exhaust is stock and have one muffler where the cat is on one pipe and then a little farther down the line put the other muffler on the second pipe so ther can both fit. Then run the pipes straight back and you will have plenty of room when you get to the back. There is not much room right there so you'll have to use small diameter mufflers.

Another idea I had was running a "69 chambered exhaust" kind of setup replacing chambers with mufflers and running them side by side. Both ways would be limited by muffler size so selection may be slim.
