exhaust system question
I am wanting to put a whole new exhaust system on my car. It is a 87' IROC with the 5.7L TPI engine, 700R4, and 3.27 gears. What is the best way to go? What kind of headers, mufflers, cats etc. I am not even sure what a catback is so if someone could explain that to me it would be great. What will all of this probablly cost and what kind of power and performance gains will I be looking at? Any comments will be helpfull.

What kind of sound are you looking for?? Flowmaster.
(you're gonna get alot of different suggestions thats why I ask) For headers SLP 1 3/4's if you want the best but there are others that are pretty good at lower prices. (always coat your headers) Converter I would go with a high-flow either Random Technologies, Catco or 1 of the others. Go with full 3" exhaust. What kind of mods do you have planned for the car, engine especially??

Well, the best headers are undisputidly SLP, but they cost BIG $$$. Catback is new exhaust, from the catalytic convertor back, which is why they call it 'catback'. It's bigger pipe, so that it has higher flow and can free up more HP. I'd go with hooker, mark will prolly be here pimpin it soon. I have Flowmaster right now and don't like it a whole lot, but whatever floats your boat. I'm going with hooker when i get the $ for headers too, it's only like 200$ for the hooker, but it'll need to be custom fitted cause the 200$ system doesn't work with slip fit cat's I believe.

I wouldn't recommend getting a hooker besides the exhaust kind, who knows what little critters you'll pick up.

I want a nice deep throaty sound like I have a big block under the hood. I know my next modification is gonna be a performance chip but after that I'm not sure. Maybe some MSD products like ignition and distributor. I have heard good things about Hooker headers. My dad has Hooker Super Competition headers and his car sounds great. He is also running some type of racing mufflers but I'm not sure if they will pass emmissions. I guess he doesnt need to, its a 55' Chevy. Would you recommend getting duel mufflers or having both sides run through one? I have also heard that going as big as 3 inches on the pipes will cause problems going ove bumps and such, is this true?

Stay away from the chips. Advance your timing, same results, alot less money. Spend it elsewhere on things that actually make a difference and are needed. The ignition stuff is a good idea. There shouldn't be any clearance issues with full 3" exhaust. Last edited by IROCZTWENTYGR8; Apr 11, 2002 at 02:56 AM.
