MAKING my hood lighter...
hi!
i have a steel hood on my maro with a hole cut in and a 4 inch cowl induction attached to it(fiber).
now, i was wondering if its possible to cut out the metal from under the hood.
So all is left is the top of the hood, i know it will make it flimsy and a bit fragile, but this car is for track only.
will it work, or need it a bit of strenghtening with 2 small metal bars or something.
anyone did something like this?
thank you

the flimsier the hood the more likely your add on scoop will crack.

I cut out everything except the front brace, scoop is riveted on and hasn't cracked at z rated speeds. Then again, I haven't bondo'd the seams either.

if bondoed it will definitely crack. you may run into a freak chance though that the fiberglass cowl might start to crack from the now see stress placed on it.

I removed the inner sheetmetal supports in the center of my '89 IROC hood, and it's not worth the effort. The inner bracing is extremely thin sheetmetal, while the outer skin of the hood is much thicker, and where all the weight is. If you want to - take a hot air gun to loosen the "blobs" that attach the inner to the outer, and cut it w/ shears, nibbler, or cutoff disc.
