intake lower air scoop.

well, it's not much.... at all. but here is my first fabrication. made this scoop out of light weight steel that was lying around the garage. my dad had used it to patch holes in the floor of his street stock nova race car. there was some left over...

anyway, the purpose of this mod is to force cool outside air into the engine bay, specifically for the intake. if i lived in a dry clymat like arizona i would have boxed the top so as to make a shroud to ONLY allow air from outside to get to the filter, but i live in oregon. so during the winter months i have a piece of rubber that i can put in there to block off the scoop so i don't liquid lock my engine. it fits in my map pocket when not in use.

I wouldnt suggest you run that on heavily flooded streets or heavy rain, say bye bye to MAF sensor.

WELL…

The filter is too small, the scoop is too big and there is no chamber or any reason for airflow to slow down around the filter (to get that cool, dense charge). Even if you had a properly sized filter I wouldn’t be surprised if you actually had a drop in intake airflow/pressure since the air would shoot by the filter assembly and most likely create a vacuum in that area.

I think you are going to experience some high speed "refabrication" I.e., that sucker is gonna fold back when you hit some serious speed.

its pop rivited at the joints. i have had it up to 110 since i did it. no bending yet. but i was worried about that too.

yeah, the filter is a bit small. but it still alows WAY more air in then stock. the firebirds have a 1/2" by 3" crack to suck air through stock . i will be getting a bigger one eventualy, a 9" cone but keep in mind this is on a 2.8L not a 5.7L. my six can only suck so much... wait...

vortech305- i have a closeoff plate i put in there to seal off the tray i cut out. no water gets in (at least not much) i would also NEVER drive in a flooded street.

realy? dang should i make a box or somthing? i could make a cover out of the leftover rubber i used for the blockoff plate.

the way these things work is that they break when it’s most inconvenient.

I’d be surprised… filters flow a lot less then even a small opening.

a box, significantly larger then the inlet area would be the best approach. The idea is that you want dense, slow moving air around the filter.

cool. (well i hope ) next time i get a sunny day to work on the car i will bust somthing out. it is rainy season right now in oregon. i have the scoop blocked off. but my temperture probe seems to indicate that even with the area blocked off my intake air is about the same as the outside air. (my dad gave me some el-cheapo brand in car thermomiter. you are suposed to put it in your doorjamb, but i put it on the top of my airfilter.
