Heavily Modified LT1 Intake???

I have tried many different searches with no luck. Not to long back someone posted a heavily modified LT1 intake to look similar to the TPIS intake. If someone has pics, or can put me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the response, but that wasn't what I was looking for. This person literally took a grinder and opened up underneath the main part of the plenum on a LT1 intake, so it is similar to the TPIS system or to airgap style setup.

Yeah, I seen a post about it around a month or 2 ago. I am doing the LIT intake mod and would love to see his work again for some ideas.

Really, if you look at an LT1 manifold and what he ended up with, it’s not all that amazing a job. As a matter of fact, someone totally **** retentive, after seeing what he’s done could probably make a better looking setup, but I have to admit, that it took some real guts for the guy to first pick up the plasma cutter and grinder and start hacking at the manifold. If it wasn’t for the fact that I’ve seen it done I’d worry about running in to an EGR or IAC passage in the space below the plenum and winding up with something that cannot be fixed.

Looking at it does give me a couple of ideas also.

First, cutting it up like that does give you the perfect opportunity to cut a little more and fix some of the LT1 manifold’s problems from undernieth, where the work won’t be obvious/ugly. You can increase plenum volume from the bottom, basically not changing the overall look of the setup and even maybe reprofiling the runners into a better shape which people have done before by adding aluminum to the top of the runner behind the injectors.

Also, this kind of dissection lends a lot of possibilities for the LT1 -> SBC swappers out there, since now you have a not more room to run cooling lines.

Well I got my complete LT1 Intake this past Saturday, went and pulled it myself at a local wreckers from a 94 Caprice. Engine ran fine when it came to the lot. Took my all of 45 minutes to pull it, and cost me only $75 Canadian. The condition is very decent consider our winters, so it's off to the cutting boards! LOL!!

The new Edelbrock catalog for 2006 that we just got in at my store, shows a new manifold available for LT1 engines... LT1 Air-Gap. Check it out in the catalog (not up on their site yet though, strange)..

Edelbrock is toting that they'll be releasing those soon due to the fact that the LT4 products were just discontinued from GM. In reality Edelbrock's manifold has been in the summit catalog for over 7 years. Date keeps getting pushed back.

Is the one you're referring to a port-injection manifold?? I know the carb manifold has been out there.. Look on Pg 14 of this PDF of the 2006 catalog (Pg 59 on the paper one):

the idea I had on the one I just sold was I to weld a plate across the bottom at the front only (inside lifter valley). add alittle meat near the coolant ports on top , grind them through so they worked like a normal sbc coolant passage and grab a old quad water neck (or make a similar looking one just smaller on the lath) long story short put a 3.8 v6 thermostat in the front of the intake just above the eng. block. if you cleaned up the welds it would look real clean and factory looking



I guess looking at the above picture you could just build a box off the front like a miniram

Modifying like that looks like it might mess up the IAC ports internally. I guess it doesn't matter if you use an aftermarket throttle body because they mess up the IAC ports as is usually (bad idle).

Looks neat though.

If I had to guess its painted just because in the 1st pic you can see a line of paint of the side of the diamon plate.

Then again he could have taped off the diamond plate and powdercoated it also..

hard call without seeing it in person.

After looking at it, I’m pretty sure that that is paint, mainly because you can see some epoxy that is covered in some spots and not in others… I know that there is metal bearing epoxy that you can powdercoat over, but what are the chances…

How did you do the stripes, did you wipe them off before baking, mask them somehow or sand them after baking?

Sanded 1st then they get masked off. . Then polished after the parts coated. Sanding it off after would be a PITA.


Ive never tried the epoxy they clame can be coated over. I've talked to a few people who have and they said it doesnt work that great. The powder cures diff and you can tell right where the epoxy is.

Yea, I've heard similar.

Look at the back shot of the manifold where he has the egr stuff filled and the front shot where you can see the epoxy holding the diamond plate on. I'm pretty sure that's paint...
