Hey guys, dumb question here as I have no welding experience. If you have powdercoated subframe connectors, do you have to grind off the powdercoat to weld to the bare metal? It's not something that I'm attempting, just curious before I purchase my subframe connectors.

Yes. You need metal-metal to weld.

 

I usually put them up in position, mark all the spots on the body and the connectors, grind off the powdercoat and any coatings on the body, spray them with some weld through primer and then weld…

Then spray it with a rattle can after the weldig has cooled.

Heh, if you get it just right you hit it with the spray bomb while it’s still cooling and the whole area is in the 150* range… you’ll bake the paint on and it will be almost as hard as the original powdercoat. The warm parts also cause the paint to flow out better for a smoother, shinier finish with less chance of runs…

Of course, I seem to get luckier than most
