No More T Tops???

Hows it going you guys? I recently bought a 86 GTA that just happend to have more rust then expected..... Im going to Cut the T tops off the car, and turn it into a "Targa" top. I love the car but it has way to much rust. I have a 79' 350 4 bolt main under the hood, with a 700 r4 tranny. I dont plan to make it into a big hot rod as i wanted to, but now im gonna do it fo-sho. Anyways i need help for reinforcing the body.. Im getting Sub Frame Conectors, but i dont know what kind to get. I really dont want to do the whole role cage in there.... i plan to add a loud sound system and a few screens to the car, and last but not least some Lambo Doors. Any advice would be welcomed, let me know what u all think. thanks

Re: No More T Tops???

how much rust does it actually have? targa on one of these cars is gonna be pretty difficult to do and have a good amount of structural rigidity, you're definitely gonna have to do the sfc's and if the floors are rusted you're going to have to replace the pans too, there was at least one guy on here who had started a targa project but then gave up and made the car into a vert. good luck with the whole project though sounds like it'd be pretty cool to see.

(you can see the rear of the vert in the other garage door)

Went from That Targa Conversion to a Vert.

My Input..

#1 get some weld in SFC's 1st.
Prob. alstons which tie in the subframes AND some outer sfc's like hotchkis subframe connectors . and you should be good.

#2 if your floor is swiss cheese with rust. Don't even think about a targa Top. fix the rust 1st then work your way to other mods.

Re: No More T Tops???

yup you're the guy, any pics of the car in its current state?
and i think the targa mod is pretty unique but i prefer the t-tops, a targa is very impractical unless when you take the top off you can fold it in half to store it in the back.

Story behind the pic's is here...

I keep all the vert specific pieces for the New Project.
http://www.cecoatings.com/images/Car...r/DSC03644.JPG

and actually you CAN fit a solid targa top in the back of the car.
Or even In the back seats.

Re: No More T Tops???

hey man sorry about the car, it was lookin good. my buddie was adding headers to a 72 mustang, when we rolled it off the ramp the car took off and plowed into a 2000 dodge! nothing happend to the truck but the pony got it from behind . hit just right that it poped off the gas tank, pushed in the trunk, and broke the tail lights! slow speeds...... bad thing about it, it was a customers car, that had been restored from the frame up! My Ta's Tbar is a lost case, took off everything and it has a hole big enough to hold my beer. the floor pans look good, nothing major. it does have a lil bit on where ur supose to jack it up, but besides that its alright. Im looking around for S.F.C but havent found any ones that i like. Im going to take some pics of it today, if the weather clears up. I took this one with my cell, its just a side shot

Re: No More T Tops???

doing targa and scissor doors on a 3rd gen that puts down power definitely stresses even a well maintained rust-free example. Then you also plan to weigh it down with lots of stereo equipment too. Doing all this to a car with significant rust really begs the question "is it worth it?". That'll be alot of time and money to put into a rusty car.

Your car is a Trans Am because GTAs didn't get side vents only Trans Ams.
