basic weldin question

i have a chrome exhaust tip i would like to attach to an aluminum muffler. since i cant attach any clamps to the tip i would weld it but i only have an arc welder and that wont do the job. i was wondering if i brazed them together would it hold? i would just do it and find out for myself but i would hate to loose the tip even though it was free

Re: basic weldin question

you can not weld steel to aluminum, it will just not hold, are you sure its an alum muffler and not stainless steel?

Re: basic weldin question

The muffler is most likely aluminized not solid aluminum. Dont try brazing. Your arc welder would be better than that.

Almost all aftermarket mufflers / tubing are aluminized steel. It's like a thin coating, kinda like galvanized except different. A mig welder will weld it just like any other steel.

For this particular case, just go to an exhaust shop. They have good welders, and experience. Shouldnt be more than $10 -$20 to get 1 tip welded on.

All good advice on going to the muffler shops for this quick easy stuff. Alot of shops do the real quick things for free. Menieke here welded on an O2 sensor bung for me for free on an exhaust extension.

my friend paid $70 because the weld just behind his muffler and it fell off but I'm in Massachusetts so everything is more expensive than it should be
