Strange Question

I don't really know where else to put this. I mean not only does it not have a place in any of the categories, but i don't even know where to ask on the entire internet. haha. Maybe you will find it somehow related.

I have rebuilt my 350 engine and I have some pieces left from the build. I want to make a coster from one of the pistons however, this means that I will need to separate it from the skirt. I only want the top of the piston from the top ring. What tool would be the right tool for cutting threw a piston? I believe it to be Aluminium however, it could be cast iron. It's a stock piston if that helps anyone.

Thanks
-Nate

Re: Strange Question

Pistons are aluminum. Try a hacksaw with an aluminum blade.

Re: Strange Question

Or take it to a machine shop equipt with a lathe and cut the skirt off. Maybe even a driveline shop.

Re: Strange Question

Thanks for the suggestions. I had a conversation with my father about this and he said that it is far to great a task for something at home. Mind you, I'm 19 years old and this isn't the first time he's said this.

I would like to invest in a band saw. It's $100 and is Made by Ryobi. I think that this would really speed the process up and be the 'right tool' for the job. I think he is worried about safety. I tried to tell him that the skirt is a pretty big and i could use a clamp to hold on to that as I pushed it threw with a 2x4 . The question is: do you think this is a viable way to do this?

Re: Strange Question

A bandsaw for cutting metal is a different beast from a bandsaw for cutting wood.

You're making this far too complicated. Cut the skirt off with an aluminum hacksaw, file it smooth with an aluminum file. Shouldn't take you more than half an hour.

Re: Strange Question

Well i'm using the hacksaw, and I'd come over there and present you with a metal if you can do it in 30 minutes. I'm working hard on it and i'm no slacker. It's been around 30 minutes and I have to do this for at least an hour more.

Re: Strange Question

Did you put an aluminum blade in the hacksaw?

Re: Strange Question

Well that took around 2 hours. I don't know if it's an aluminium blade but it is a metal blade for sure.

Now I only have to do 1 more, make the bottom level and put some cork on it.

I have a left over camshaft. Is there anything you guys can think of for that?

Re: Strange Question

The cam could make for a very uncoumfortable piece of a backrest on a chair.

Re: Strange Question

If you have an off-road type vehicle you can use some camshafts for the cross braces of a brush guard.

Or if you can find three more, you could use them for legs on a coffee table or nightstand or something. For the top of the coffee table you could use the tailgate of an old truck.

You could clean it up and use it as a towel rack in your bathroom. Heck depending on how many you could find, you could make a rod for your shower curtain.

Just some ideas...

Re: Strange Question

itll take a hacksaw with a good blade, thread cutting oil to move all the metal junk away, and alot of time. well it shouldnt take that long

for the cam, hacksaw that thing and make it hold your toilet paper or maybe make it a rack for coats with acouple hooks

Re: Strange Question

I've got a couple of cams, maybe I can make a lamp set LOL one's an LT1 stock roller and the other a worn out Toyota 22R cam. Any of the others I've just thrown on the ground and shattered for fun. Got a set of 8 283 stock pistons too. I was going to use those as the feet for a bench seat, couch out in the shop.
