Battery Tray

Has anyone fabricated their own battery tray to replace the rusted one. My battery was on the pass. side and has a good amount of rust there. Pics? ideas (other than buying OEM piece)?

Re: Battery Tray

one of the best fixes ( IMO ) is to install a 4th gen battery tray/coolant tank . i did this on my 89rs , as we speak i just finished cutting out the bottom of the battery tray in my 88s/c . ( cuts on my hand are still bleeding ) get one from a dealership ( $40.+ as i recall or hit J/Y ) cut out bottom of old battery tray . clean cancer/rust , paint . set new tray in position , mark and drill mounting holes . battery will set about 2" inbd. and 1" higher . no clearence problems with me . you get rid of ugly coolant recovery container and have a new battery tray that will not rust . has worked for me . good luck .

Re: Battery Tray

Good idea with the 4th gen. battery/coolant tank. Did you get a tetanus shot recently? A doc. asked me that the last time I had a cut from metal.

Re: Battery Tray

The 4th gen idea sounds cool if it works. Otherwise, about 20 minutes with a shear and a box and pan brake I could make a nice one.

Re: Battery Tray

forgot to mention , when installing tank there is a fender brace that needs to be repositioned below battery tray . no biggie , remove , install tank/battery tray , just shorten brace , reposition , secure . i have done 2 and each work great . good luck .

Re: Battery Tray

I just made one out of some sheet steel. It might not be pretty, but it does the job.

Re: Battery Tray

What is the thickness of that steel piece? My welder tends to burn through the thinner steel. If it didn't I would've bought the replacement tray for $40.

Re: Battery Tray

This was some 22 gauge I had laying around. It's probably a little too thin and it is hard to weld without burning through it. I did this before I found out there were repro trays available.

Re: Battery Tray

Yeah, for all of you guys that have the battery on the right side there is a repo out there; if you can find it. For all of us that have the battery on the left side; we're screwed.
