Hey Everyone.

Im planning on installing a 6pt roll bar into my iroc this year as ive got a new LS1 motor going in which is good for about 400rwhp, and then ive got a 150 nitrous shot for the car.

What id like to do is try to keep the rear seats.

I know most people say it isnt safe, but ive thought of a few things that may make it okay:

Padding across the horizontal bar
Install harness's into the rear seats so in the event of an accident, the rear seat occupants are straped tight into the seat and wont move.

Opinions? Im well aware it wont be comfy back there, but i want the car to still be capable of carring more then 1 passenger.

Padding and better seat belts aren't the issue. Just having to climb over the horizontal bar will have your passengers complaining.

If you don't run quicker than 11.50 then you don't need a roll bar. If you need one, passengers in the rear when street driven will have to live with it.

Im not too worried about it being a PITA to get in and out of, i just want to know that in the event of an accident, that my passengers arnt going to go face first into a horizontal bar.

I'd never put anyone in the back seat with a hoop all around their head....just my .02

I understand where your coming from and im figureing this might be my outcome, im just tryin real hard to make it so i can "If absolutaly needed" have someone sit in the back.

I mean i had people in the back of my car all of 3 times this year. But those 3 times it was nessecary to have the seats there. Im going to look into this more w/ a shitload of measurements.

I was hoping padding around would make it a little better, and the harness in the rear would make it so that if there was an incident, the rear occupants arnt going anywhere so theres no chance of them eating horizontal bar.

I know its not the safest thing ever, but i was hoping the harness & padding would make up for the fact that the stock seatbelts are slack and allow alot of movement.

Am i way off on this one?

I'd skip the roll bar if this is going to be a mode of transportation for a lot of people. Or just realize that it's going to be a 2 seater and you should buy a 4 door car then.

Its not a mode of transportation for alot of people, its just the odd time its nice o be able to carry more then 1 passenger.

I was really hoping id be able to make them usable. I have a 4dr winter car, but i cant afford to insure both at 1 time.

Guess ill have to think this one out.

I can gaurentee i be be going past 11.5s w/ my H/C/I 346 + nitrous.

Ill probably just put teh cage in the car then try to work something out after, if i cant get it setup, ill just learn to accept the fact.

you can afford all that but not insurance on 2 cars, which is typically cheaper or around the same rate for a multiple car discount.

Insurance for me is $3700/yr. Im 18.

Its a massive chunk that wuold come out of what i can do to the car. I may just scrap the idea of putting a cage in the car. Ill wait untill i can put a rear end/driveshaft that are capable of running those times

Maybe nuts but what about making the bar removable.
I have seen this on a vette once that a guy used for road racing. The bar held the harness and he would take it all out for street duty.

you don't want the bar removable, it won't pass NHRA tech and then he won't have the ability to run under 11.50, which is what his goals are here. i've got the backseats still in my car but would never seriously entertain the idea of actually putting someone back there...tha's just NOT a good idea...here's some pics of mine though:

how did that guy keep the bar in there and have it hold anything? pins and a bracket?

I never got to see it up close so I don't know but he said it was a aftermarket kit for vettes oh and it was a C4 LT1 car

for those who don't know what I'm talking about. why is this legal but the cross bar wouldn't be.

Buy the way I'm intrested in this bc although my car is slow now I do plan on getting it into the 11's sooner or later. I also already have the 6pt bar setup that i never used(went to a 12pt cage) from when i did my 87 camaro. I have 2 kids who love my RS so I would like to still be able to drive it with them.

Thanks guy! my whole big thing here was if i used harness's in the rear so that in the event of an accident the passenger is held firmly into the seat and wont be hitting and bars/

if you really wanted to do it with the proper thinking it could be done but it wouldn't be too much fun for them having the little amount of room there is to start with then adding the horizontal bar making it even less. it would be semi comfortable even with small children and that isn't one that I would recommend anyway. I will probably put a 6 point in my vert and keep it off the track. rules are alot stricter on verts (I would need a 14 point cage after my big block swap, not even an option in my mind ) could do something like that if it will mainly be on the road anyway. You'll get one track run in on it before the tech's send you home if you got as much as you are saying you will.

Well I have a 70 Nova with a back seat and 6 point cage I have had 4 people in the car and the 2 in the back seat was 5'8-6' 220+



If its a street car keep the back seat if not screw it....

also having a caged car with a back seat at a show gets you more points
