What are my options for headlights?
What are my options for headlights?
I have a 92' trans am Firebird. V6
I've always liked the blue super bright one's I see on Bmw's.
I am interested in headlights since my pop up ones I can't even barely see the road with them.. I think they're 35 watts? Anyway I would like to know whats out there, and where. I think it would be cool to have blue beams for the high beams and maybe normal color for the flip ups. Also does anyone know about smoking the headlights different colors? Thank you.

The "blue super bright" ones in BMWs are HIDs in appropriate projector housings. You arent going to find a set of lights for your car that will duplicate that and be drop in. Besides...most of the really bright ones arent really blue. They flicker through the spectrum of colors due to the lens. If they are a solid blue, then they put some sort of aftermarket bulb in them, and they pretty much annoy every driver on on the road. Sometimes its just a different temperature bulb, but most times they want "blue light".
Your bulbs, assuming they are stock are 35/55 watts. I think. Something like that. You cant pay too much attention to wattage though. Because those super bright HIDs arent high wattage either.
I know what you mean about poor visibility with the stock light set up. A couple things you can do will improve this without going overboard on cost. You can get yourself a set of Silverstars whilch will provide more white light vs. your stockers that are probably on the dim-yellow side. Or you can install a set of H4 conversions that will allow you to run the H4/9003 bulbs. These bulbs plug right into your stock harness, and they open up your options for bulbs quite a bit.
HOWEVER. The biggest thing you can do to improve you lighting is improve you wiring. Your wiring is sub par for lighting. Most older factory vehicles and some newer are. You can build your own harness or buy one. I recommend buliding one. You are basically wanting to run your lights straight off your battery using relays to control them. Lots of write ups on here and you can google the harness upgrade too.
If you do the wire upgrade, along with a set of "NON-import" bulbs, you'll be set. I say non-import because tehre are ones out there that are pure junk. They are just colored bulbs and and poor quality. With the wiring upgrade, you can run just about whatever wattage you want. I have 90/100s (shhhh) in my jeep with H4 conversions and they work great.
There is no way to have your hi/lo beams be different temps/colors. If you REALLY want HIDs, you can check out the thread in the FABRICATION forum for HID projector retrofit. A couple of us are fitting projector housings into our pop-up assemblies. Its the only way, in my humble opinion, to add HID lights properly and safely.
IM not sure why you'd want to smoke the headlights. First its not legal in most states, not sure where you are, and second, they are down during the day, and during the night when they're up you'll never notice. Plus..you want brighter. Smoking them is going to take some light away..?
If you have any more questions post em up!

Re: What are my options for headlights?
ghettocruiser just summed it up pretty well right there. If you want better lights than stock, you have a few choices - colored high wattage bulbs, normal high wattage bulbs, Silverstars/equivalent, or HIDs. If you want to upgrade you'll need new housings. Stockers are sealed beam and you can't do anything with them. They're terrible anyways; they're cloudy glass with terrible bulbs. Wiring upgrade is also a good idea, especially if you plan to run high wattage bulbs. The age of some of these cars makes it difficult for them to keep up with the stock lighting demand. There's a really good tech article on that. If you want two colors for high/low, you're going to have to convert to two bulbs per light in some way. Wiring it is the easy part, fitting two bulbs and their holders is the tricky part. I currently have two projectors with HIDs in them on each side of my car, plus in the fogs. Check out the Fab board for my thread. You could easily add a second bulb to an aftermarket housing to have two different colors or fab something totally different, maybe like the 4th gen T/As have. Creativity is your best weapon on this one since we're limited on space.
Hope we helped you out and if you have more ?s keep posting, we'd be glad to help.

Thank you both very much. Honestly I wasn't expecting there to be that much detail to the way the lights are set up. I am going to take the info on bulbs, harnesses, HID spectrum and so fourth to guide me. You guys explained very well.

Re: What are my options for headlights?
Look for "E" (European) code housings (make sure you get left hand drive housings) and put dual beam HIDs (I recommend 6000K) in them. Just make sure you properly aim them after the install, so you won't blind oncoming drivers.
Here is a thread on doing projectors

Just a little to much work for me, that's why I choose E code housings

I use h4 conversion housings that I bought on clearance at a local CSK auto when I worked there along with some Osram higher output capsules (higher lumen output; which is what you want to pay attention to moreso because that's an actual measurement of light output, not electrical input like when you say 80/100 watt bulbs).
Although the ultimate right now is retro'ing HIDs the 91-92's have a hard time doing so with the small housing you'd need to run a Bi-xenon projector. Meaning, it's both a low beam and high beam in one projector (a shade moves across the capsule) and then you run into clearance issues with how far back the motor mechanism extends into the headlight bucket and interferes with the headlight door.
Good luck; I love bright lights aimed properly.
