Re: homemade lcarb's

i know that the ones you buy drop the lca 2 and 3 inches. i measured across the center of the holes of the lca to get the radius of the holes in the bracket. i laid down a 4' x4' piece of partical board and made a line 19.25" long. put a nail on one end of the line and wraped masonry twine around it. then tied the other end of the string to a pencil at the other end. i kept the line tight and swung the radius downward to create my arc. then i drew my side view of the bracket on the wood and used calipers to measure the x and y cordinates then measured on the metal plate and center punched it then drilled away. there was a little more to it but i just made it short and sweet.

I wish I had the experiance with a welder, then I too could make my own. I know how and have more then enough of the material needed just laying around and I have a welder in the house... I'm just not that good at welding.

Re: homemade lcarb's

ive been welding for about a year. i didnt have anyone looking over my shoulder telling me what to do. i just went and bought a ton of wire and had at it on a bunch of scrap stuff. now i consider myself pretty good. im only as good as the welder itself is capable of doing. just practice and you will get it eventually.

Very nice. Hey, anyway you could post up some scematics for those of us more inclined at copying than engineering?

It seems like it is really hard to find any sort of suspension dimension on here. Im at school 300 miles away from my car and i want to make a set of these but i need dimensions so if you got em i could use them. thanks.

How about a template? $60 bucks is a lot of money for some simple mild steel with holes.

If its so simple why are you asking for his templates? Most people would be willing to pay $60 for a set of lcarb's...

Because it would save me time trying to locate the holes. Not trying to offend anyone, I just don't need them to be pretty and powdercoated and all.

I just got my umi ones in, I can probably give a generic dimension template of what they look like. Shouldn't be a problem, considering it's a very simple design anyone could replicate. Some people can't afford it, some people want to experiment, and although I love UMI, and they do wonderful work , I'm pro do-it-yourself if you can.

However, $60 for a design, cut, assembled, welded, painted, with hardware included is a very reasonable price.

Re: homemade lcarb's

Wow!! That'll help a lot! Thanks a lot! and I understand it being a reasonable price for what's included, but from my stand point (being: doesn't need to look pretty, and I have access to plenty of hardware), It is not worth spending as much money on them as what some people want for them. But to each their own, I can completely understand why some do prefer to buy nice brand new name brand parts. If my car was a show car or an autocross car or something, I might dig a little deeper in my wallet.

I personally do like "doing it myself" though, It makes me feel like I've accomplished more. and being a college kid, I don't have all the money in the world...

Thanks again for that template!!

Re: homemade lcarb's

Can you tell me the exact measurement shown by the crude arrow in this picture? I'm going to use 3/16" steel for mine, I imagine it'll be easier to get my hands on. but this measurement is really more important than any.

Thanks!

Re: homemade lcarb's

At the top, not including the additional thickness of 5/32 times 2 comes out to be 2 3/4".
With the extra 5/32 x 2 added as shown in between where your arrow sits, it comes out to be... ~ 2-7/16.

Maybe this pic will help lol

Re: homemade lcarb's

Not sure what you guys are using your cars for but if your going through the trouble of making your own then you might want to improve on a plain design. If your car is lowered and you want to drag race it is possible to need even more holes! Places like trz use 7holes in there rearend builds

Re: homemade lcarb's

My car is honestly a daily driver that I want lowered, but I just don't want to sacrifice too much cash or traction. I do some hot rodding here and there, but I don't need to do anything too crazy.

I don't see that TRZ makes one for our F-Bodies.

he is just kinda saying that its cheaper to just buy them. And founders sells these, with all new hardware for 47 bux, its a no brainer.

but if you need a project to keep you busy for a few hours, and you have toe tools, go for it.

Re: homemade lcarb's

agreed... If it takes you 3 hours to make a set then divide the cost of what they sell for by 3 and add the cost of materials...this is what it cost you per hour (paying your self) its simple math it always comes down to which you do have more of time or money... or you just lack fabrication skills...
