Re: 87 IROC GROUND UP BUILD
Mine is originally a 5.7, black on black, but it getting a fresh 406 small block (600hp) and a six speed this go around. I don't mind the work so much, its the paying for parts bit I have a hard time with, lol. That is actually an old picture of the car, I had two coats of epoxy sealer (tinted black to hide inevitable chips) applied to the unibody. It has been fit back together in the garage with a 10 point cage for now. I have to do all the fabrication for the new suspension, driveline and exhaust yet. It will have to come completely back apart again for the stripping and epoxying of the doors, fenders, hood, etc, then of course final paint. I see at least two years of puttering and buying yet. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have the 88GTA on the rotisserie beside it getting a freshening for the summer. My wife has the patience of a saint!

Re: 87 IROC GROUND UP BUILD
I see birdsandbowties hasn't been logged in since his last post on Jan 6th....so I'll give you an answer from what it has cost me.
I stripped the car completely, cleaned the undercoating off and did the welding/patching to repair the two reduculously small rust spots the car had. I also bought and installed the roll cage, built the rotisserie, mounted the car on it and delivered it to the bodyshop like that. My $4550 (canadian) payment to the body shop covered them blasting, sanding the outer panels, remove a small dent, prep and two gallons of epoxy primer/sealer (two coats, inside, underneath, outside of unibody only) both dyed black to hide any inevitable chips later). Keep in mind, I still have the hood, front fenders, doors and bumper supports to be sanded and epoxied, and no final paint has yet been applied.

Re: 87 IROC GROUND UP BUILD
Good question... Ive been at it for almost 5 years. In those years, I had a baby and built a new house. It will be running this year for sure, but 100% finished? Probably in late 2010. Family first, car second. I cant wait to turn the key tho. Hell, I dont even remember the feeling driving the car and Im the owner for the past 12 years. Thats a GREAT project youre having there also! IMO its the only way to do it. Do it once "the right way", dont ever look back.

Re: 87 IROC GROUND UP BUILD
Starting from scratch like that really helps when
it comes to bracing for our cars.
Strut tower bracing, sub frame connectors, inner and
outer fenderwheel modifications ect. ect.
All while keeping it stock appearing.
Nice start

Re: 87 IROC GROUND UP BUILD
I hear ya Spike, I should have a look for some more recent pictures of my build, it is coming along. I can't wait to get it on the road but other priorities are slowly delaying it. I don't wish to completely hijack a thread I didn't start, so I'll post a new thread once I sort out my pictures.

I'm jealous, wish I had the space and time to do that with mine. Have fun and keep us posted!
