I am wondering what is the best fitting and quality roll cages. I have bought kits before and some weren't all that great. Any feedback or suggestions on a specific company would be great. thanks, Jason

 

I guess i also should have said that I am putting this in a '91 Z-28 and planning on leaving the dash in the car.

Competition Engineering makes good cages, I have one by them and it has more than enough material,which is better than not enough! Summit and other sell CE cages.

 

CSC Racing is where I got mine, they are flexable and the service was great, you can see my cage on thier web site, or under Fabrication "street stcok build" in this forum.

CSC Racing cages are designed for stock cars. They're excessive for street or drag use.

$200 for just a main hoop of .120 DOM? The little bit of weight saved from using the thinner material doesn't justify the extra cost and CM costs even more.

You can get a full cage made from .134 MS for $250 from S&W plus many other cage kits from places like Jegs, CE etc for around the same price.

The cost of the kit is cheap. The cost of installation is expensive. Don't build it with below minimum spec requirements. No sense investing money into a cage if it won't pass a certification. If it doesn't need a certification, why put in a full cage?

exactly what kit did you get from them?

 

i've got an s&w cage with the optional through dash bars and it fit great. all the tubes were way too long, which is a good thing...i'm using most of my scrap tubing to practice tig welding. the basic cage kit is erw (?) tubing, not DOM...just letting you know because there seems to be a fad that your cage has to be DOM tubing, which it does not (at least to certify to 8.50 & slower).

 

DOM (drawn over mandrel) just has closer tolerances but you pay the price for it. The bars of a cage need to be specific sizes. A proper kit will provide the correct diameters. Minimum thickness of mild steel is .118". Chrome Moly is .083"

.120" DOM will have enough variation in thickness to stay very close to .120". Standard tubing for cages is .134" ERW (electric welded seam). There's a wide variation of thickness with ERW and using .134" will still keep it above .118". If you used .120 ERW, chances are it would be too thin.

If getting the cage certified, they use something like an untrasound to check tubing thickness. Too thin and it fails.

 

Heff17, I bought the 501-6 with the optional diag bar on the hoop and the X bars on the pass side. Yes, my car is a stock and car set up for road racing, excessive? you bet!

However, my comment was that CSC is "FLEXABLE" and can make anything you want.

My cage was close to 400lbs delivered and the install went great, the bent parts were right on the mark, the rest was up to me, it all depends on what you are doing with your car I guess.

These fit with full stock interior, and they have varying application levels. have used them in the past and they seem to be pretty well constructed, although it was never fully tested (i.e. rolled/smashed car :P)

 

Be careful. Most of those are not NHRA/IHRA approved as they are bolt together cages.

 

i used the CE 8pt kit from summit. fit was good, but its really up to u. ive purchased stuff from S&W like my aluminum door panels and they have great quality and support. dont go cheap on the cage/roll bar.

mild steel has to be .134" thick due to NHRA, and moly has to be .083" the kits have to be NHRA approved or whats the point to installing them? might as well get something thats good for it all. you even have to be carefull when buying 5pt harnesses and door bar swing out kits. My CE door bar swing out kit is rated and NHRA certified to 9.5s in the 1/4... faster than i'll ever go. i'll be hoping for 10s

also with my CE roll bar kit... i had to slightly bend the hoop inwards about 1-2" this was easy with a cable pull jack, and needed to be done to fit the way i wanted it too... ive heard of others doing this as well.

 

I bought Chris Alstons 10pt cage the other day. So far it has measured up and is close fitting. I have the main hop and bars around the door tacked in and they fit nicely. Really those are only the two main parts as the rest are straight bars. One of my corporate offices is just down the road(less than a mile) from their store...saved a ton on shipping also that way..

I looked seriously an Ed Quay's cage also. He designs his stuff around the 3rd Gen as he has built numerous world champion cars in his day. Quite a bit more(4130 only) but something tells me he might be worth it

 

i have to vote for the S&w 8 point. easy install and fitment
