reparing upper door hinge?

My upper door hinge needs to be fixed, and I don't know what is the best way of going about repairing it. It is dragging on the ground effect. Any suggestions?

Re: reparing upper door hinge?

You'll have to unbolt the door from the body. You should replace the lower hinge pins while you doing this as well, they're only like $15. You'll also need a spring compressor to take the spring off the lower hinge. The upper hinges get cut out with a grinder and the new ones will bolt on.

Re: reparing upper door hinge?

I talked to somebody this morning, and he told me he can repair it w/o removing the hinge. He is a third gen techi. Something about drilling out and replacing with a bolt. I didn't quite understand, but I'll look into it. Ever hear of anything like this?

Sounds like he thinks he can just put in a bolt in place of the bushings....I sure hope not!

Be OK for a bit, until the HEAVY doors start chewing up the metal of the bolts he slid in as "hinges".

Re: reparing upper door hinge?

That would temporarily fix it, but it would squeak, and probably wear out quickly. Also, that would make it more difficult to fix correctly later. IMO, That sounds like a stupid ******* way to fix it.
I recommend doing right the first time, with a kit like TDS sells.

I'm sure there are lots of other places to get them, but, you get what you pay for.

You aren't really saving much, if any, by buying them elsewhere though.

You can also, at least to get upper pins, take them from any '82-'02 F-body, or just make your own.

Re: reparing upper door hinge?

I'm planning on getting lower pin, but the upper in my IROC is definitly loosie goosie. In the mean time, I put a thin layer of axle grease on my ground effect so it doesn't rubb it away. Gonna get if fixed next week. If I need a new hinge, then it will get one.
