What Would You Do With 2"&4" Strips of Stainless?

Hey guys i got a bunch of 2 and 4 inch wide strips of stainless steal ranging from 2' to 4' in length. I already made all my exhaust mounts out of it.

Got any cool ideas i could use it for?

I also got some polished aluminum, any ideas?

This is what i made so far: battery cover, canister cover, and this 2"x4" emblem (i want to have one cnc'ed out of some of that stainless)

I like my gray door sills though. I think i'll try to make a 3rd brake light cover, except have it milled or cnc'ed out with the correct lettering. So that the letters "IROC-Z" are the only things allowing light through.

think so? i know they make stickers that go over them. maybe that would equate to too much iroc-z lettering on the car.

Re: What Would You Do With 2"&4" Strips of Stainless?

I know I will probably get some negative comments for this seeing as how it would most likely be seen on an import vehicle but here it goes...

What if you did the stainless/aluminum door sills but instead of engraving, you just had that letters cut out. Then buy a flat strip of LED's and place them under the cutout with a piece of fogged plexiglass or something overs the lights. Then splice the LED's into the dome light or whatever else is with it. This would cause the door sill to light up whenever you open the door. You can use different color light as well... red would probably look really good with your car. It would provide another custom touch to your car that 99% of people wouldn't have. I know the stock door sill is kind of thick so this may actually be easier then it first seems to be.

I don't know, just my for now.

Ok, let the r.i.c.e.r comments commence...

You got one hell of a mind! I would have never thought of that. The led's would have to be VERY small though. I bet there's no more than .25" from the bottom of the door to the steel supporting the sill.

I think i'll go to the machine shop down the road and see if they can even cut letters out for me.

Great Ideas guys!

You would have to get SMD strips (Surface Mount Diode). They are no taller than 1/8 inch and you can get them in flexible and rigid strips.

The waterproof ones I found were a 1/4"x3/8" thick due to the protective casing. I didn't spend much time looking so maybe something smaller can be found. The lights I did find also seemed to be really spaced out (like 1" between lights). I would think you would want the lights really close so the light looks uniform instead of seperate lights under the letters. Maybe you would end up having to make your own strip of of LEDs. Can't be that hard... just time consuming. I would post the link but I'm using my iPod right now.

Or, instead of just making the plates that go over the stock door sill, you could use the 4" wide pieces to make a completly custom sill. Then you could make it a little taller so it would fit the LEDs a little better. All you would need is some poster board for a template to make sure the dimensions are right, and a sheet metal break to make the bends nice and straight (or you could use a 2"x4" and a hammer). I'm just thinking out loud again.

Maybe I'll have to beat you to this, lol!

To make the illuminated door sill blend in more, you could always swap the stock incadesent(sp?) dome light with a matching LED light. It has been done before and I think JamesC? just made a thread about it. You can always search with my name and the keywords of "dome light" to find the thread. Here too, I would just post the link but I'm still on my iPod. You could always go further and swap the lights behind your gauges and your center counsel to LEDs.

If that wasn't enough, you could always delete the ash tray in the center counsel and use my door sill idea to have IROC-Z shine through there. Or, if you felt really ambitious, you could have the letters cut out of your dash (in the same spot as Firebird map pouches) and use my idea there instead, but just wire it into the map lights of the overhead counsel or if you don't have that you could wire them them into the map lights on your rear view mirror.

This is pretty typical of me. All kinds of ideas, but will I ever impliment them myself... probably not. I guess I'm what some would call lazy. Heck, I've had the spindles to do a front brake upgrade for the last 4 months and I have yet to even start any machine work.

Re: What Would You Do With 2"&4" Strips of Stainless?

I found a light that is only 1.6x0.8mm (base) and only 0.4mm tall. It is considered a super bright red LED, and it has a 120* light angle. It also has an operating range of -40* to 90* C so it should be fine in the elements of any region. You can get 10 of them as samples for free before you have to buy them. I would think if your friends let you use their address, you could get all of them you would need for free. I was thinking 10-20 per door but it depends on how big the letters will be.

Just some food for thought.

These are the links I mentioned earlier:

http://www.purdyelectronics.com/pdf/AND7RA.pdf

Here are some more I found. I'm not sure how it will work because I just found the link and it looked ok so I'm posting it.

Another thing you could make is a upper radiator support. Just polish it up like you did with the battery cover. Or just make new emblems out of the polished stainless or aluminum.

Yea i could make them tonight. They would be the same size as the original and would just stick on with 3M double stick tape. Do you want stainless or aluminum?

Re: What Would You Do With 2"&4" Strips of Stainless?

I got some made today, still need to polish them though. I dont think i'll do any kind of engraving though, IDK how i'd do that good enough to sell them. Right now they're blank aluminum plates that would go into the nose emblem hole.

How would $10 shipped sound?

Re: What Would You Do With 2"&4" Strips of Stainless?

i was hoping they would be engraved like the one that i saw up top there. i have some sheets of stainless, and i was going to make it out of that but idk how i would do with engraving. well i guess ill just make some of my own and see how it works out. if its not very good then ill get back to you? i hate saying ill get something, then have you make them and me not end up purchasing one. how did you engrave that one up there?

Re: What Would You Do With 2"&4" Strips of Stainless?

I used a dremel. IDK how i could do it so it's good enough to sell. If i would bring it to a shop they would charge more than $10 for the engraving i'm sure.

Price lowered to $7.50? I'll post up a pic tomorrow.
