CHEAP CLEANUP

i was working around the rear deck and wanted to do something with the 20 year old - grey plastics. i was going to buy some used ones on this board from one of the regulars - which means they are in great shape but just did not have the money to do that and all the new engine parts.
but i twas just depressing.
i had a new carpet, new leather seats, full power, and i am putting a leather carpet into the back.
so here are the before and after as to the parts.
so here are before and after - but the before are not all that great.
after are nice. will post them in the car later.
only took about 4 hours out and spray - 3 times each piece - light coats.
cost - 3 cans of paint at 6.00 each - and still have 90% of the last can.

Re: CHEAP CLEANUP

and here are all the pieces painted. they look great. the paint does not run, just put it on slow and use 3 coats - light ones for the first 2 and the last one - make it heavier but dont go nuts.
will post pics after they are in the car probably tomorrow.

Re: CHEAP CLEANUP

i used one called KRYLON FUSION satin black. Nit is made specifically for plastic that is outdoors as well as indoors. i think it is a perfect match to the black plastics that is in the car. not bling - just nice. it looked so good that i also did the black plastic pieces too, they looked just a tad dull. most of the pieces are not anyplace were people are, except the entrance, but 10 bolts and they are out and re-done.
my only problem is the grey seat belt covers. dont know how to get them out. maybe i will paint them in the car lots of pretection. i think the grey seat belts will look ok for now.
will have it all put together today if i get the sound proofing.

glad you liked it - and i could help.

take a small piece of plastic and hit it with the color you want. do the back of the pretend rear glove box on the drivers side. i could not believe how well it worked.
picked up the paint info right on this board, too.

ok im almost done but i am slmost done in too. wife coming home so got to cleanup and prepare. now it takes me all night to do what i used to do all night.
ok the first picture is of somthing you might not remember. it is called a "casset tape" and you can actually listen to it in something called a "tape player." and this one was not bought at a swap meet - it came with this car when i bought it for the wife in march 1990.have the original book too.
remember this is just a cleanup - nothing beats new plastics. but you can see what it looks like before you want a color change.
ok the next pic is one of the sound padding. i went with cheap rather than expensive. carpet sound deadening material. also adds some padding too. faux leather will go over that. some is on the truck lid too. i have the blank ready for the rear but i have to cut it and make the final pieces.

Re: CHEAP CLEANUP

ok here are a few of the interior that went from nasty dirty grey to black.
i am showing a washed out pic but if you look you will see 2 holes, one in the bottom and one in the middle. the problem is that there should be 3 holes - one in the top and its for the bottom. well i had to drill one for the top because it was not there.
lets all thank hussein obama for giving the auto workers most of the stock in gm so that we can continue to see this kind of workmanship.
i cant tell you how many times this happended but i was so fed up i finally took a pic of it.
as an aside - everything has a left and a right side - so look at the brace for your cargo cover - one is larger and one is smaller so pay attention. and im talking about the little out side piece. on my car it was smaller for the passenger side and larter for the drivers side. but the uaw screws theings up all the time.
i put in power mirrors and the uaw decided to reverse the color coding on the mirrors so left was right and right was left. go figure

ok here is the back installed and a poor pic of the front. i am so tired i need to have a drink and take a nap.
still have to add on the leather speaker covers - yes i did them too in faux leather, not paint.
and yes i used 200 mile an hour tape.
well i am all done for now - will provide you pics of faux leather in the rear then they are done.

I redid my interior the same way about a year ago and was able to get rid of all the scratches and knicks in them by sanding the down with some 220 grit sand paper.. after that hit it with 2 light coats of a white crinkle coating spray paint then paint it with 3 coats of whatever color you want and then I clear coated mine for extra protection.. Made my interior panels look like I stole them from the factory floor in 82... cost me time and about 30 bucks in paint or so...

Re: CHEAP CLEANUP

good point to remember. i hit mine with ultra fine steel wool. but i did not have to use anything else. some pieces were not hit that way because i like the detail, like the thrust plate covers.
but that is an excellent way to do it.
