No, you mean you want both wheels spinning 100% of the time this does not make it a posi/limted slip. why would you want that? you'll never turn with somthing like that . . . look for a limted slip dont waste your time welding spider gears. by the way posi and limted slip are the same thing just diffrent names from diffrent companys. in case you didnt know

 

That would create a locker.

Fine if it is pure drag race car, but not good for the street or road race car. The only turning you wanna do with a locker rear end, is minimal turning.

But yes...Possible to weld, but doesn't make it a posi. Good idea? No.

 

all i needed was a simple, yes, it's possible, but no it's not a good idea, and thank you on the textbook definition of positive traction. i think the world understood what i was getting at. just another boner, stroking himself.

definitely a bad idea... i have limited slip in my rs and it locks fast.. you would be going through tires like crazy just from turning...just my .2

i welded the one in my car. i cut the edges of the cones and the spider gear down. welded the cones in, then put the hafe carrier down over the axle then welded the spider in. i dont mind it on the street and it runs 10.90s at the track.

 

Actually, what you end up with is a spool. Even a locker will allow one side to unlock on overrun until you add throttle again.

I have known a couple of people who did the welded gears mod for a street duty car, and they seemed to have managed OK as long as the weather held and as long they could put up with having the tires always chirping while going around neighborhood corners.

But if you have a slightly twitchy foot and much power at all, this could very easily be a downright evil thing to drive in any kind of inclement weather. The rear end will keep trying to come around on you, and may not give you much warning.

im also debating doing the same thing... Since i cant get my 9 bolt to have posi... because cones SUCK... i was thinking of welding it or finding a 10 bolt and rebuilding the posi in it.
Witch would be stronger? A 10 bolt posi (LOL)
or the 9 bolt welded... I know it would obviously depend on who welded it but you get my idea...
I plan on around 400hp and have a really heavy right foot.. its my daily driver though.

 

Why weld the spiders? 9" spools and mini spools are cheap. I wouldn't recommend either for street use.

 

No its not a good idea. Although it is possible to do it WILL break. Some sooner than others but it wont last long. Not only that it will cause your rear tires to wear faster (possably negating any money you saved by doing this vs swapping to another axle or adding posi) and also i would think it could potentially be a bit of a saftey issue in snow or rain seeing as how in turns one wheel will be breaking loose. If i had to chose welding a 9 bolt or going to a 10 bolt ide go the 10 bolt although ide rather have a 1 legger 9 bolt than a posi 10 bolt. The 9 bolt is just a better axle (except for getting replacement parts) and will hold up better. Then again i don't competitively drag race only street driving so posi is not a huge benefit to me. Course if i did competitively race i still wouldn't use a posi 10 bolt either id go 12 bolt or 9 inch but those are pricey.

 

Car will NEVER see snow.. and will ONLY see rain if a cloud pops up while im driving it on a sunny day...
I dont mind tires chirping around corners and I sure dont mind rear tire wear... lol..... I just wasnt sure about how you would weld it with the cone in there, With it being 4 pinon it would deffinatly not break at the weld. I will in no way ever have a sports car that wont slide around a corner

I have a used 3 series carrier you can have for $150 + shipping. The cones have been turned and shimmed but it's marginal. Pulls posi in a straight line but will spin the inside tire in turns. If you are going to weld it then it would be a great start. I also have a set of 3.27's for $75. $200 for both. PM me if interested.
