Shorten stock shifter rod

i have a 1992 Camaro RS 3.1L V6 with a 5 speed trany..what i have been wanting to do is cut the stock shifter rod shorter and re-thread it, just so it is physically shorter.

is there anything bad with doing this..will it still shift correctly?

is this okay to do?

thanks

Welcome to TGO.

No. Yes. Yes.

If you want the benefit of a real short throw, you might consider one of the after market versions.

Wouldn't it be easier to chop a section out of the middle, then weld it back together? That way you don't have to mess with re-threading it.

Re: Shorten stock shifter rod

I did this to mine a year ago, i cut it so short that the top of the shift **** is only an inch above the top of the console.

no problems with it at all.

Re: Shorten stock shifter rod

When my shifter broke from too many speed shifts, I cut the two surfaces off flush and welded it back together. It still retains the stock **** thread but is a good bit shorter than stock...a quality short throw, limited travel shifter would be much nicer and have a larger variety of ***** available, but this works for a guy on limited funds.
