WIEGHT SAVINGS???

i was thinking of doin this notchback conversion to my camaro cause #1 ive never seen one on a car other than the internet and #2 i heard from a guy who claims his buddy saved a decent amount of wieght by doin it to his firebird ive never seen the car so i was just wondering if the guy was blowin smoke can i save any significant amount of wieght by doing this??? btw im planning on removing the rear seats and basically anything the car doesnt need to function properly ie power locks windows seats etc... would the notchback be worth it since its the only thing i wanna do for wieght savings that will cost me any money

heres the kit from hawks...

Re: WIEGHT SAVINGS???

Why are you trying to shave off weight? If for racing, is it strip only or street/strip. The notchback will remove some weight but the weight is also over the rear where it can help. The worst thing about the notchback is the look. It just doesn't look like a Camaro with a notchback.

There's been a notchback available on Ebay for the last few months. Nobody seems to be interested in it.

For my "strip only" car, I use a piece of Lexan for a rear window. It's permanently attached to the body and doesn't open. The rear deck lid is a piece of aluminum that I can remove if I ever need to access the battery. My car is still nose heavy but I need some weight to help keep the front end down.

Re: WIEGHT SAVINGS???

i dont really hit the track just wanna get rid of unnecessary wieght make it a little quicker i know most ppl do that for there track only cars but i wanna do racing seats maybe a four or six point cage i just was thinkin about the notchback cause not many ppl do it it would make my car stand out in a crowd its a love hate mod i love it somedays and somedays i think it looks like ***... i just wanna basically gut the car of anything i dont NEED just make it clean and simple through and through... and would lexan even be worth doin for the entire car? what are the pros and cons of lexan? i have no experience with it at all.. eventually i would like my car to be a street/strip car but as for now i wanna make it quick and clean it up

Re: WIEGHT SAVINGS???

You don't want Lexan in a street car. It's not legal for street use plus it will scratch fairly easily. There's no window frame for the doors so the Lexan won't seal on the window seal like glass will. Basically Lexan will shed some pounds but it's a track only option. The glass windshield is only 20 pounds. Lexan is 10.

Trying to shed weight but still keep it looking stock and street safe is very limited to what you can do. Adding a roll bar will put about 70 pounds back into the car.

If you're not interested in comfort, you can do things like rip up the carpet and remove all the underlay which is heavy. In a safety aspect but it won't be visible, you can cut the crash bars out of the inside of the doors. There's lots of little things that you can do but keeping it stock looking and safe, there isn't going to be any huge weight savings. Probably the best option would be to remove the steel hood and install a fiberglass one. Take off all the power steering stuff and install a manual steering box from an 84+ S10. Aluminum heads and intake. Lightweight rims. The list can go one and on.

For track only, my suggestion is always to remove everything not required for speed or safety. Having full interior, seats, dash, carpet etc may look impressive in a track car but it's all dead weight that the engine has to move.
