aluminum NASCAR style spoiler on 83 Bird

i was thinking of going from the stock wing to a conventional spoiler...like the Sprint Cup cars....ideas?

i know the wings are only really effective over 70 mph, so i figured a lip spoiler wound provide more downforce at lower speeds...plus they look sick. i don't care about drag, drag means downforce...the car has awesome aero otherwise. keep in mind, i have a NASCAR theme going on with my car, so this would just add to it.

looking at something like this for a start and mod it to fit a Bird:

get a real spoiler, not that aluminum **** in your link, probably bend once the car is at speed, and it will block vision

Re: aluminum NASCAR style spoiler on 83 Bird

The .080 is a decent thickness to build with, but without any rear supports like the one //<86TA>\\ linked to, it will bend backwards. If it is strong enough to resist folding backwards/flattening out? It will start pulling on the body sheetmetal & either distort it upwards, or rip out.

Looks like on that Monte Carlo, the tail lights risk being cracked & busted.

But they are both way overpriced. Build your own for a fraction of those prices.

Re: aluminum NASCAR style spoiler on 83 Bird

huh good to know Stephen. i'd def reinforce it...the pic is just for reference. idk how tall it is...prob 4" or 5". i like the lexan ones //<86TA>\\ posted the link to...but they ARE a bit pricey. so how do i go about making my own out of either aluminum or lexan? i don't have a sheet metal brake to bend up a spoiler. i'd prob end up having it on a hinge with the adjustable supports, that way i could mess with the angle, rather than having it at a fixed 70* angle like the Cup cars.

Look for a place that sells sheet aluminum or Lexan. A local sign shop definately could sell you both. That is how a lot of our signs were made of, especially the formed letter ones. And the shop should have a sheetmetal brake. We had 2.....A 4' brake & a 10' brake. Shouldn't be hard to get one them to sell you a piece & bend it, or even bend a piece you brought in to them.

Those turnbuckles are nice, but only if you ever wanted to adjust it. Which could be good if you ever decided you wanted it changed. Like for high speed vs low speed tracks, to change the amount of drag & downforce it gave you. But without any real data collection, you'd be only be going at how it felt between test. And you'd want long turnbuckles, to reach the rear bumper & mounted to the metal bumper inside, to provide support. Although, the plastic rear bumper could only go so far down before hitting it.

For the street, it would mainly be just an appearance thing.

Re: aluminum NASCAR style spoiler on 83 Bird

Here is what I am working on, originally started off with a plate of aluminum, then a plate of carbon fiber. The following pictures are of those. I have since decided to go with molded carbon fiber with integrated aluminum lugs for the struts. I think I can blend the parts better that way and get a better flowing shape. Food for thought though…

I made one of those for my camaro I repurposed a front bug deflecter from a 77 suburban (nice flat shape) and designed for the wind some small 90 degree and plain flat shelf brackets for bracing and wa-la a nascar style spoiler.

that looks pretty good, but if you go much taller, you wont be able to see out the back of the car really well with a solid color spoiler like that

We run one of the 5 star alluminum spoilers on our asphalt late model. at 135 mph its not bending in the least bit.

You really need to understand wing and spoiler design. The NASCAR style spoiler that points upward similar to the above pictures produces a huge amount of drag. A drag racing spoiler goes straight off the back mainly to eliminate drag by directing the airflow off the back of the car. To apply downforce on a drag spoiler, a wickerbill is attached to the rear lip of the spoiler. My wickerbill is only 3/4" high and provides a lot of downforce.

Those NASCAR spoilers may provide more downforce at slower speeds but the turbulence behind them will make a lot of drag.

This is how my homemade wing turned out.

Thread hijack... alky why is it every time i see another pic of your car i get more and more afraid?

As a appearance mod, it would look sick. As a performance mod, i dunno, maybe you can use it if you get up to speed on the LIE.

i would like to have one like this. however the spoiler on this car will not work on our cars due to the angles. hard to explain however, you can look at the pictures and look for yourself

Re: aluminum NASCAR style spoiler on 83 Bird

Here is the one I fabricated from scrap Aluminum I had lying around. Works really well at speed.

I had it powder coated last month, been using it in raw and it was getting a little abused. I like the semi gloss black better. Using Stainless button heads to hold it in place. It is 4.5" in the center and around 5 at the ends. Since we are road racing this I did not bother to add any ends where the factory one were. Someday I will seal and paint.

The rules in a lot of racing series require those to be clear for rear visibility reasons. A good Autocross spoiler for <100mph work can be 7-10 inches tall, pretty tough to see over if you're backing out of a parking space or out of a driveway. I think I'd go with a clear one... even if it looks a bit unorthodox to the layperson.

Thats getting closer! You think its possible to add turnbuckles and make a little less angle?

Re: aluminum NASCAR style spoiler on 83 Bird

I have a set of NASCAR COT adjusters that I wanted to use but the shape of the car just doesn't allow it. The taillights are in the way along with plate. I am not a big fan of the adjusters of the rear bumper which eliminates the access to the trunk especially in my car since that is our access to the fuel cell filler.

trunk. That car is a race car, there is no trunk. besides his entire hatch is bolted to the car with a hundred or so machine screws. Its not coming off.

and as its been pointed out a few times. these are available in clear so you can see through them, helpful on a road course, not as much of an issue for auto-x. and they work just as well as metal ones.

you can still use the turnbuck/supports with the stock decklid and still be able to open it. The deck is very strong and will support the wing and supports with no problems. So its still an option, what material is used for the wing is up to you. I believe Stan's (big-mods) deck lid is a piece of thin aluminum, not a stock piece.

Actually my deck lid open. My fuel cell is there and that is how I fill it up. Just the back window is fixed. I added a crossmember to attach the polycarb window to and two stock car hinges for the metal part.

Re: aluminum NASCAR style spoiler on 83 Bird

Austin's (big_mods) car is a great car to look at for references of things that work in a racecar environment as his car is one badass machine.

Re: aluminum NASCAR style spoiler on 83 Bird

I find your roll cage mount very interesting. A real good way of doing a good weld without having the tube bent down.

From what I can see, a small section is welded vertically then the cage tube is fish mouthed onto that upright. I see nothing wrong with doing it like that instead of a very sharp angle cut on the tube and try to weld that to the frame rail. Is the top of the vertical tube capped off? If it isn't, it probably should be.

Re: aluminum NASCAR style spoiler on 83 Bird

Actually those bars attach from the rear stays to the rear frame rail. used just for additional protection for the Fuel Safe Cell. I left them open to access some mounting bolts for the underside. The side that connects to the uprights on the rear stays have my weight jack bolts attached inside.

Here is a before picture.

We built this car hastily to get to a 24 hour Chump Race in Spokane. Been trying to refine the car between every event along with 50-60 hour work weeks in the shop. My poor Camaro gets neglected usually a week before the next event.

OK, back to the subject of Spoilers.

A lot of good ideas here. I've got a personal favorite spoiler though. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedw...ler,52661.html

Actually this angle doesn't look too bad....

Re: aluminum NASCAR style spoiler on 83 Bird

Still thinking of doing something like this to our iroc-z. Making an adjustable spoiler like the ones in forza 4. Trying to convince my sister that co-owns the car will be the hard part.

If anyone needs the adjustable supports, actual "race used" ones for this project PM me. I work right down the street fron Roush Yates used parts. I should be able to get them pretty cheap, since they are $25 a piece brand new.
